When is Tatiana Day a student day?

On January 25, the Day of the Student is celebrated in Russia. It is at this time in all universities of the country the winter session ends, and the students begin their vacation. This date by the decree of the president of the country began to be officially considered as the Day of Students. This youth festival coincides with the name day of Tatiana. Why is the patroness of high school students considered this great martyr?

The Day of Tatiana

January 25 is both a church day (St. Tatiana's day) and a professional holiday for all students. Often, freshmen, hearing about the existence of such a celebration, begin to cope with more experienced colleagues - undergraduates: when Tatyana's Day? After all, this date is associated with them at the end of the winter session and the release from endless classes and preparation for examinations. But where did it come from the custom to celebrate Student's Day on Tatyana's name day? Holy, whose name-days celebrate in late January, was born in the first half of the 3rd century AD and was a Roman. Her family was considered very noble and rich in the Roman Empire, but Tatyana's father was a secret adherent of Christianity and brought up his daughter according to the canons and values of his religion.

Tatiana grew up and vowed celibacy. She devoted her life to faith and charity: she looked after the sick. Because of her adherence to Christianity Tatyana was persecuted, her body was subjected to torture, but the girl's spirit was managed to be broken. In the end, she was cut off. The Christian Church ranked it to the saints, and from this time on the church calendar there was a holiday dedicated to the memory of this holy martyr. To the question of the uninitiated: "When is Tatyana's Day?" - you can safely answer: "January 25". However, the reason why this saint became the patroness of all students remains for us a mystery. And maybe it's just a coincidence?

Birthday of the Moscow State University

Probably, many know that the first Russian university was founded in 1755 in Moscow by the decree of Empress Elizaveta Petrovna. The date of signing the decree coincided with Tatyana's day (in the old style - January 12). Since then, Tatyana has become the patroness of all students. Much later, Nicholas the First issued a decree on the celebration not of the opening day of the university, but about considering this date as the Day of all students. Since that time, at first only listeners of Moscow University, and then students of other universities of the country began to celebrate their "professional" holiday on January 25 - a day that, according to the church calendar, is the name day of all Tatians. On this day, after passing all the exams, students organized lush folk festivals. In those days, the celebration of this day for Moscow was a real event.

In connection with this holiday, the most lucky girls were Tatiana, regardless of whether they are students or schoolgirls, employees or housewives. All the owners of this name on this day are asked with flowers and gifts. The guys who are in love with them, from the first day of acquaintance are beginning to be interested when Tatyana's Day. It turns out that the owners of this beautiful name in their holiday calendar have one more holiday than, for example, Natasha or Masha. After all, all their acquaintances always know exactly when Tatyana's Day is the patroness of all students, but for female students, birthday parties are a double celebration.
