Legend has it that in 1772 King Ferdinand I incognito in Naples tried the pizza and wanted to introduce this dish to the royal menu. The attempt was unsuccessful: his wife found the dish for common people unsuitable for royalty.

The next king - Ferdinand II - was more inventive: by his order, the pizza was secretly baked and served on the royal table on the day of the celebration of the thirtieth anniversary of Queen Margarita of Savoy. Pizza on a recipe for royalty has since been called "Margarita".
