Rowan - thin, curly, scarlet. Reflection of this beauty in folk art

This relatively low tree is found in Europe, Asia and North America. Rowan ... Thin, like a girl's waist, with bright red bunches of berries, burning scarlet fire against a background of white snow - this tree looks spectacularly in summer, and in autumn and winter.

Maybe that is why rowan is so loved in Russia, where it grows almost everywhere - near houses, along roads, in deciduous and coniferous forests and forest plantations.

Magical properties of mountain ash

People love this tree very much . Rowan is mentioned in many folk songs and legends.

To this tree, popular rumor ascribes magical properties-it is believed that it can confer a gift on a person. Obviously, therefore, in some places, rowan is also called a "witch tree".

That's how she is - rowan. A thin twig with carved leaves can save from other people's spells and protect from disease and witchcraft. Without her image in their products, masters of painting on wood from Khokhloma are rarely enough.

The leaves of mountain ash are fastened to the shepherd's staff as a guard, protecting cattle from the evil eye and attacks of wolves.

Catholic priests and Old Believers make crosses from her wood. Earlier, a plank of rowan was lined with ships' stems, and its logs were laid in the foundations of wooden churches and other religious buildings.

It is believed that Jesus Christ the Savior of mankind was crucified on a cross made of rowan, so the rowan tree is attributed another property - to drive away death and illness from man.

Folk song as a means to look into the depths of the human soul

The best way is to learn the soul of a nation that inhabits our land, a folk song helps. It has been transmitted from generation to generation for centuries. It could come up with a simple peasant or a worker, and a master or a priest could sing. And vice versa, romances composed by venerable composers are picked up by ordinary people and become folk art over time.

Actually, the writer of a truly national song and does not pretend that his name was preserved in the centuries. Words come from the heart, are born from the experience of deep emotional impulses. Maybe that's why they find a response in the soul of another person, and over time, a simple, seemingly, work becomes a masterpiece of folk art. This applies fully to many genres that have been folklore processed. This is also the song "Thin Rowan".

History of the song "Thin Rowan"

In 1864, the self-taught poet Ivan Zakharovich Surikov wrote an uncomplicated poem about the beloved folk tree-rowan. At that time, the young man was only 23 years old, but he had already been married for more than three years to an orphaned girl from a poor estate. What was the reason for writing the poem - is unknown, but in his lines the pain from unrequited love and impossibility to connect hearts of "oak" and "mountain ash" is clearly read.

An unknown author put a poem to music, the song fell in love with and in a slightly modified, folklore version reached our days. Until now, if they start to sing for the feast, then someone will definitely tighten up "Oh, the curly mountain ash", "Ah, this red mountain ash," "Thin ashberry," or another song that mentions this extraordinary tree.

Folk song about rowan in the performance of famous artists

The words "What are you standing, swaying, thin rowanberry ..." have often sounded from the lips of the famous folk singer Lyudmila Zykina and Nadezhda Kadysheva. The song also entered the male repertoire - it is perfectly performed by Yuri Gulyaev and Shura. No less beautiful "Rowan thin" sounds in the performance of the duo - Alexander Mikhailov and Taisiya Povaliy, as well as the musical groups - the vocal-instrumental ensemble "Singing Guitars" and the Moldovan VIC "Norok".

It is interesting to listen to how a simple and uncomplicated melody, into which the performer puts a part of his voice and world outlook, acquires a new, different from other sound. Apparently, this is the secret of truly folk songs.
