Popular attractions in Odessa: photos and reviews of tourists

Ah, Odessa, a pearl by the sea ... These words from the famous song best characterize one of the most beautiful cities in Ukraine. Odessa is sung in verse, it has become the place of filming of many films, Ostap Bender admired it many times, and it's not necessary to speak about humor and coloring of local residents.

This is a city that combines incompatible things. And the sights of Odessa can safely compete with interesting places of Athens or Rome itself. There is everything to spend an unforgettable summer vacation: the sea, the sun, beaches, wonderful excursions and fashionable hotels. Odessa-Mama is always glad to welcome her guests and give them a wonderful journey through their architectural and cultural monuments.

Brief history of the city

In the XIII century, just when the Golden Horde rules, in the territory of modern Odessa there was a settlement of Ginestra. At the end of the fourteenth century and the beginning of the next century, it was part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Then it was called Kachibey, Kotsubeyev or Hajibey.

Since 1475 Kachibey passes under the administration of the Ottoman Empire and receives the name of Ajibey or Hajibey. In 1764, the fortress of Eni-Dunja was erected here. But in mid-September 1789 (during this period the second Russian-Turkish war had a place), it was captured by a company of Major-General of the Russian army Joseph de Ribas.

In May 1794, Catherine II issued a decree according to which a military harbor was built on the site of Khadjibey. Joseph de Ribas and Franz de Vollan began to draw up a plan for the creation of the city. The first bricks of Odessa were laid on September 2 of the same year. And the name of the city came from the Greek village of Odissos or Odessos.

The main sights of Odessa were created at the time of the most outstanding city governors, who did a lot for the prosperity of the settlement. Their names are Admiral de Ribas, Count Langeron and Vorontsov, Duke of Duc de Richelieu.

What to see in Odessa

In this seaside town there are so many different outstanding places that you do not immediately orient yourself, what can and should be looked at here. Therefore, we have compiled a list of those monuments and institutions that must be visited:

  • Passage;
  • The Potemkin Stairs;
  • A monument to Richelieu;
  • Bringing;
  • Primorsky Boulevard;
  • Deribasovskaya street.

These attractions of Odessa (a list of which can continue and continue) are known to many of this or that film, stories of acquaintances, newspaper jokes. All of them became symbols of the city, its visiting card, a highlight.

Up and down the steps of the Potemkin Stairs

Coming to Odessa, tourists immediately go on an excursion to the Potemkin Stairs. Many of them know this city precisely because of the aforementioned object. Meanwhile, the description of Odessa's attractions could be started from another place. But if the public demands, then we have no right to refuse.

So, world fame Potemkin Stairs brought the film "Battleship Potemkin" directed by S. Eisenstein. The object was built from 1837 to 1841. The author of the project was the architect F. K. Boffo, and the initiator of the creation of such an amazing architectural miracle was the famous Count Vorontsov. The sandstone of the green-gray shade for the construction of the steps was brought from Trieste. In 1933 the landmark underwent reconstruction.

At the very beginning, there were 200 steps on the stairs. But, when in 1866 the construction of Primorsky Street began, eight steps had to be dismantled. Therefore, today the Potemkin Stairs have 192 steps. The length of the structure reaches 142 meters, and it rises to a 30-meter height. But to overcome this path is not difficult, since every two dozen steps are replaced by a platform.

Passage

The one who saw the film "Seaside Boulevard", practically made a tour of this amazing place. After all, in this movie you could see many sights of the city of Odessa. One of them is the Passage. This building is a chic hotel, which is among the most beautiful buildings of the city. "Passage" amazes attention with the refinement of sculptural compositions and architecture itself. Inside the hotel there is a real street with rows of shops of elite class. Light inside the structure provides a high glass roof. It also creates a feeling of immensity. The house was opened in 1899 and since then it has been used exclusively as a shopping center.

The man, who for the first time crosses the threshold of the entrance and gets under the glass roof, makes an involuntary delight "Ah!". And this is not surprising, because the Passage is an unsurpassed masterpiece of typical Odessa architecture.

All to the market!

It would be a real crime to describe the popular sights of Odessa and not to mention the world famous market Privoz. After all, this is the center of trade, known to the whole planet. Every year more than one hundred thousand people come here. There is a rumor that there is nothing here that can not be bought. You can buy even more. "Privoz" works every day, exception is only Monday. Here you can meet with colorful local beggars beggars. They refer to visitors only as a "gentleman" and will always please you with Odessa jokes.

In 1827 an unusually large market was built on Privoznaya Square. From this moment the story of "Privoz" begins. Immediately it became the most important Odessa market. And the architectural complex complements the "Fruit passage" - four buildings of two floors each.

The famous monument to Duke

Odessa's attractions are not only markets and steps, but also monuments to people who have done a lot for the development of the city. Such a monument was awarded to the Duke de Richelieu. The sculpture was installed in 1828, and its author was IP Martos. This was the first monument that was installed in Odessa.

The statue is cast from bronze and installed on the honor of a French aristocrat, who in 1804-1815 was the governor-general of the city. Richelieu was portrayed in toga of the Romans, he holds a scroll in his hand. And three highlights from brass embody trade, justice and agriculture. Arman-Emmanuel de Richelieu did an incredibly great deal to build the city, he turned it into a big trading port. By this act, he deserved among the local population love and recognition.

All the boulevards of the boulevard

"Seaside Boulevard" is not only the name of a famous musical film, but also a street in Odessa, so popular that it can not be forgotten. Many of Odessa's attractions (interesting places and monuments) are on this cheerful boulevard. Reviews of tourists about Primorskoye are always full of emotions, positive impressions and a bright mood. The building of the old stock exchange was the beginning of Primorsky Boulevard. She, by the way, also bears the title of one of the most outstanding city attractions. And the end of the street is marked by the same unrivaled architectural ensemble of the Vorontsov Palace.

The construction of the boulevard began in the first years of the century before last. Until the end of this century it was called Nikolaevsky. He was a favorite place for walks of Lesya Ukrainka, Aivazovsky, Gogol, Belinsky and Pushkin. The Primorsky Boulevard combines the brightest sights of Odessa.

At Deribasovskaya good weather

Another local symbol and landmark is Deribasovskaya Street, also known for its popular Soviet comedy film. The street was named after the distinguished architect of the city, IM De Ribas. Deribasovskaya is the main street of the pedestrian type in Odessa. Here tourists can admire unsurpassed architecture, visit numerous shops and cafeterias. Deribasovskaya (the same as Primorsky Boulevard) is loved by local residents.

Amazing Odessa! Sightseeing (tours of which cost from 1400 hryvnia) will not leave anyone indifferent. The city always welcomes guests with joy, giving them unforgettable impressions and staying in hearts and memories for life.
