On Bolshaya Morskaya street, not far from St. Isaac's Cathedral, there is a two-story building, which at first sight does not stand out among St. Petersburg buildings. Is it only a semi-circular bay window above the porch. But behind its threshold everything changes radically. The elegant decoration of the halls is not inferior in its luxury and grandeur to the royal palaces. In St. Petersburg, this building is known as the House of Architects.

A bit of history

The mansion was built by architect Alexander Pel in 1836. During his great career, the famous master was the architect of the country houses of St. Petersburg and the mansions of many outstanding figures of that time. It belonged to the princes Gagarin first, and then from 1864 to Senator Polovtsov A. During the Soviet expropriation, many interior items were irretrievably lost.

Now this building on Bolshaya Morskaya is better known as the House of Architects (SPb), whose organization was located in it in the 1930s.

The war left its mark here too: Oak Hall was badly damaged, some part of it was never restored.

In the mansion it was possible to partially preserve the native interiors of the XIX century, which were restored already at the end of the XX century under the guidance of leading masters and using new materials and technologies.

Today this building is of great artistic value. Each room and stairs of the House of Architects (St. Petersburg) is a separate work of art.

Interior of the mansion

Each room, every living room of the mansion is unique and unique.
The oak hall, which served as a library before the revolution, is entirely paneled with wooden panels, has balconies with carved parapets and was once fixed with bookcases and shelves. There is a fireplace in the hall. It was built from several varieties of colored marble by Florentine masters.

The White Hall of the House of Architects in St. Petersburg amazes with a smart-solemn luxury. The walls of white marble are decorated with a gilded handmade decor, which for the most part has been preserved since the XIX century. Five double doors are framed with platbands made of pink Italian marble and decorated with gilt stucco. Complement the rich interior of the huge crystal chandeliers hanging in the center line of the hall from the painted ceiling. Parquet floor is made of more than 30 valuable species of trees.

The bronze hall is the largest hall of the mansion. Its name came from the use of gilded bronze in the decor. It has good acoustic properties, therefore, concerts of live classical music are held here.
Fireplaces were provided in all rooms. Mostly they were restored. On the second floor there is a spacious staircase made of white marble.

Modern everyday life of the mansion

How to get there?

The Architect's house is located not far from St. Isaac's Cathedral and the square with the same name. The nearest metro station is "Admiralteyskaya" (Frunzensko-Primorskaya Line), located three blocks from the building. In good weather, being in the center of the city, a walk to the mansion is only a pleasure. You can also save time on buses. From the same metro station in the right direction is the 22nd bus route.

Pass other routes there. In 150-200 meters there are bus stops "Isaakievskaya Square" or "DK Svyazi". From the square is Bolshaya Morskaya Street, on which the building stands.

The opposite side of the building, which is a closed square, overlooks the Moika River.
