Narration - what is it? What are its features?

One of the types of functional-semantic type of speech is text-narration. What is it, what is characteristic for it, features, distinctive features and much more you can learn by reading this article.

Definition

The narrative is about developing events, processes or states. Very often this type of speech is used as a way of describing the successive, developing actions, which are described in chronological order.

The narrative can be depicted schematically. In this case, it will be a chain, the links of which are the stages of actions and events in a certain time sequence.

How to prove that this is a narrative

Like any type of speech, the narrative has its own characteristics. Among them:

  • A chain of semantically related verbs, which are represented in the text in the order of the sequence of actions;
  • Different temporal forms of verbs;
  • The use of verbs for which the meaning of a sequence of actions is characteristic;
  • Various verbal forms denoting the occurrence of actions or signs;
  • Dates, figures, circumstantial and any other words that demonstrate a temporal sequence of actions;
  • Unions that denote alternation, juxtaposition, or occurrence of events.

Composition Structure

Text-narrative consists of such elements as:

  • Exposition - the introductory part;
  • The outset is the event that has become the beginning of the action;
  • The development of action is the events themselves;
  • Culmination - the outcome of the plot;
  • Denouement - an explanation of the meaning of the work.

These are the structural parts, of which the narrative usually consists. What it is, you can understand by reading the examples of texts. Quite often this type of speech is found in the scientific literature. Here it is represented by biographical notes on the history of discoveries, the study of various scientific problems and stages, which are presented in the form of a sequence of changes in historical stages, stages and so on.

Features of narration

The main goal of this type of speech is to consistently describe certain events and show all stages of its development, beginning with the outset and ending with the finale. Developing action is the main object, on which the narrative is oriented. That this is exactly so, one can be sure, having become acquainted with the signs of this type of speech, among which:

  1. The dynamics of narration is a constant change of time.
  2. The events described are of a character of refinement or chronological development.
  3. Timed logical sequence of actions.

Description VS narration

That these are two different types of speech are known, of course, to everyone, but not all are aware of what their main differences are. Basically, they differ in the features of syntactic constructions and types of communication in sentences. The main difference between description and narrative is expressed in the use of different species-temporal forms of the verb. So, in the first, verbs of the perfect kind are used, and in the second - imperfect. In addition, the description is characterized by a parallel connection, for the narrative - a chain link. There are other signs by which these types of speech can be distinguished. So, the narrative does not use impersonal sentences, and in descriptive texts - on the contrary.

This kind of text, like any other, has its own characteristics and characteristics that need to be taken into account before deciding or claiming that this description or narrative. That it is - it is easy enough to determine, having familiarized with all the above signs.
