Fracture of ankle with displacement: first aid, treatment

One of the most common injuries of the lower limbs is an ankle fracture with displacement, the treatment of which involves the full restoration of its functions and consists in its correction. The lack of qualified surgical care in such a trauma leads to prolonged pain, disruption of the ankle joint function, development of deforming arthrosis and, ultimately, disability.

The main cause of fracture of the ankle may be a sharp turn of the foot or a strong blow to it with a blunt object. In both cases, the bone is displaced relative to each other. Bleeding when getting such a trauma is usually significant, so the victim needs immediate medical attention.

Fracture of ankle with displacement Can be adduction, one-, two- and three-lobed. The first type is characterized by a subluxation of the foot to the outside or inside. Treatment of trauma is usually carried out with the use of anesthesia. In this case, a 2% solution of novocaine is introduced into the main site of the fracture. Then the ankle must be repositioned.

Adduction fracture of the ankle with an inward shift is called the Malgen's fracture. The treatment of the injury also consists in directing the broken bone with a special method and applying to the lower part of the leg of the affected plaster bandage.

The initial stage of treatment of any fracture is the provision of first aid. In its absence, the broken bone can move, damaging the skin. In such a case, one should not speak of a closed one, but of an open fracture. The first medical care for an ankle fracture involves anesthetizing a damaged leg site. If there are no analgesics, you should attach ice or a bottle of cold water to the fracture site. Cold helps to narrow the blood vessels, reduce bleeding and swelling, and also has a small analgesic effect. Next, the victim should be provided with rest, his leg should be completely immobilized. Physicians use special tires for this purpose. In household conditions a piece of plywood or a board will do. Fixation of the broken limb is carried out as follows: on both sides of the shin a solid base is applied and is wound to the foot with a bandage.

Fracture of ankle with displacement Requires mandatory hospitalization of the victim. In a medical institution, a specialist makes an X-ray of a damaged limb and determines the type of fracture. If the ankle bias is confirmed by the received image, the patient is sent to the operating room. The whole process of bone repositioning is carried out under general anesthesia. After the operation, the patient is in a lying position for a month. In case of severe damage to the bone, if it is possible to re-bias, the so-called skeletal traction is used, consisting of carrying a special spoke through the heel bone and suspending the load (up to 12 kg). This procedure avoids misalignment and improper bone splicing. After a month, the traction is removed, a cast is applied.

Fracture of the ankle without bias does not require surgical intervention. Patient with a similar injury to the injured leg is impregnated with gypsum. The timing of bone repair depends entirely on the type of fracture and ranges from 8 to 12 weeks. The full restoration of the function occurs, as a rule, within 2-3 months.

Often a fracture of the ankle with displacement is accompanied by the ingress of bone fragments into soft surrounding tissues. In such a case, mandatory surgical intervention is required. At the time of the operation, the damaged area is fixed by means of special plates or screws, then plaster is applied on it (for a period of 1 month). A year later, a repeat operation is performed, the purpose of which is to extract medical instruments from the patient's body. The final stage of treatment is the imposition of an elastic bandage on the damaged ankle. A month after the procedure, the patient is allowed to step on his aching leg.
