Why does the eggplant turn yellow, and what should be done in this situation?

Growing eggplants in the harsh weather conditions of Russia is not an easy task. You can get healthy seedlings and a decent harvest if you create comfortable conditions, ensure watering and the right temperature. But, it would seem, all the rules of planting and care are met, and seedlings begin to ache, turn yellow, develop poorly. The question that most often worries villagers: "Why do eggplants turn yellow leaves, and is it normal?"

It should be immediately said that the mass yellowing of the lower leaves is an abnormal phenomenon. This is a signal that the aubergines have been attacked by a virus, fungus or pests. In addition, there is still a lot of explanations for why the eggplant yellow leaves. Let's start with the most unpleasant diseases.

Fusarium - the enemy of eggplant and the cause of yellowing of leaves.

It is the fusariosis that destroys leaves, causing their yellowing, and then dying out. If you do not notice the problem in time, the entire plant dies. Fusarium is a fungal disease that overtakes a plant through infected seed or soil. The fungus penetrates through the root system. The disease can be recognized by the brown cut of the stem: the dark cut is the result of the life activity of the fungus in the cells of the plant. The radical neck is covered with a pink bloom (spores of a multiplying fungus). Fusarium fungus is viable for many years, so it's difficult to fight it. For the prevention of this scourge advise:

  1. Observe crop rotation. Especially it concerns the eggplant, which can be grown in the same place only after 4 years.
  2. Purchased or harvested seeds must be etched in a solution of potassium permanganate.
  3. Plant in the ground you need only healthy seedlings.
  4. Use phosphorus-potassium fertilizers.

Adaptation of seedlings to a new place and growing conditions

If, after landing on a permanent place, the leaves of the eggplant turn yellow, it is possible that the plants have not yet adapted to the new conditions. It is noticed that the aubergines very badly tolerate the transplant. Therefore, they are planted very carefully, trying not to damage the roots. In addition, this crop is very demanding for growing conditions and qualitative characteristics of the soil. Eggplants can not stand shadows, low night temperatures, frosts, insufficient watering. If, as a result of frosts, the temperature falls below the +13 degree mark, do not be surprised why the eggplant yellow leaves - such a cold for them is fatal. If plants provide proper care, their growth will resume.

The right soil is the key to success!

Another reason, because of which the lower leaves of the eggplant often turn yellow, may be the composition of the soil. In the greenhouse infertile, poorly fertilized soil should be replaced with compost, humus or neutral peat. The introduction of mineral phosphorus fertilizers will accelerate the growth and ovary of the fruit. Do not be afraid to "overfeed" the soil. From the introduced organics the plant will take only the necessary nutrients, and the question "Why do eggplants turn yellow leaves?" Will not bother you anymore.

The soil should be cleaned of weeds, loosened up, add sawdust (dead, dark color). The soil should be water-intensive, friable, in no case sour. And fresh manure as a fertilizer is generally unacceptable! The land on which grew tomatoes, peppers or potatoes is no good. But the soil from cucumbers or cabbage will be an excellent basis for beds with aubergines.
