The splendor in the Spassky Old Cathedral

Spassky Old Cathedral, famous for its beauty and perfection of architecture, is executed in the manner that architects of the late period of classicism used, is located in the Nizhny Novgorod region. There is a fair nearby. Up until the fall of 2009, the city's diocese belonged.

Prehistory

Earlier, on the spot where the Spassky Old Cathedral is located today, there was a fair. In 1816, she moved from Makariev to the territory where she is now.

At the same time, the left bank of the Oka River was chosen as a field for the construction of structures in which trade will be conducted in the future. The project of the square for the sale of various goods, near which the Spassky Old-Fair Cathedral grew up in the future, was compiled by Betenkur. Also, the architect O. Monferron, who put his hand to the construction of the St. Isaac's Cathedral, also became an architect of St. Petersburg. Spassky Old Fair in Nizhny Novgorod began functioning in 1822 year.

Changes

At the fair was the opportunity to come in just one month for the whole year. Therefore it was irrational to associate such a short-term event and the year-round functioning Spassky Old Fair Cathedral. Therefore, in order to gain great economic benefit, he was assigned to the church in the Kremlin. It was from there that the necessary items of utensils, images of saints and other things making up the interior decoration appeared in the Spassky Staroyarmarichny Cathedral. This cathedral can not be correlated with any throne, so he was nicknamed Spassky.

The iconostasis, decorating the Spassky Old Cathedral in Nizhny Novgorod, was painted by the creator Torricelli from Italy, who used the canons adopted in Europe. This caused some confusion. Many traders recognized only Orthodox traditions and did not want to pray here. On the images that adorn the Spassky Old Cathedral, the saints are open areas of the body, which in the Orthodox tradition to open is considered indecent.

There were even occasions when for the prayer the faces of saints were brought by the visitors themselves. Since the situation itself is ridiculous, the iconostasis has been replaced. This was occupied by the architect V. Stasov. Its original name was given to this place when another church dedicated to Alexander Nevsky was built.

Need to update

The cathedral stood behind the main house in which the fair was held. Its location crosses the main axis, around which the whole plan of the local trade point is concentrated. Under the construction was located a bulk ground. This is not the best way to reflect the durability of the building, so there was a negative impact of groundwater and floods, which could make the temple's position inadequate, it settled, and its walls were covered with cracks.

Further negligence in this matter could be just dangerous, so that at the end of the 19th century the authorities undertook a major overhaul. The designer of this operation was R. Kilevein, and the immediate supervisor was P. Boytsov. After the works were finished, the building was consecrated in July 1888.

However, after 11 years, in 1899, another problem appears. The cathedral could even be crushed by the bell tower, which stood side by side, as a result of which destruction would ensue. So in 1906, it was necessary to replace the nearby building with the same new one that the architects P. Michurin and P. Malinovsky built.

Break in spiritual activity

After the moment when the revolutionary struggle was over, warehouses were placed here. Most of the temples of the city suffered a similar fate. The construction of the administration was residential, and its premises were used as apartments.

In the spring of 1989, the council, engaged in religious affairs, decided to transfer the item to the Gorky administration for the purpose of carrying out restoration works. As a result, the building was used as a cathedral. The update process went very quickly. When they were not yet finished, services were held here on weekends.

Relics

Today, the temple can rightfully be called the oldest building that you can meet at the city fair.

The altar in the side-chapel is the place where the relics of M. Zheltovodsky, who was a metropolitan, are kept, his holiness was recognized in Russia. Also there is the remains of N. Arzamas, over his burial in 2002, the chapel was organized, which carried out the functions of the burial vault.

Tribute of Memory

In autumn 2009, at the presentation of the monument dedicated to the inhabitants of the city, who participated in the elimination of the consequences of the devastating Chernobyl tragedy, Cyril himself was present - the famous patriarch of Rus. The structure is a statue of an angel of 2-meter height, which stands on a raised elevation of another 3 m. Around there are massive granite slabs. Here you can see the words taken from the Scriptures.

Also there are names of people who died. This amazing composition you can see if you go to the alley, which you can get to the temple itself. This is the point where there is a mortgage element of construction, which a decade ago was illuminated by Metropolitan N. Kutepov. The construction was made using funds supplied from the city's diocese. The memorial to the Novgorod liquidators of the events in Chernobyl was completed in the autumn of 2009.

An extremely beautiful place is the Spassky Old Cathedral. Address: Fair passage, 10. This is the place where not only the soul receives enlightenment and answers to internal questions, but the look is saturated with the beauty that is here.
