The coldest city in the world is in Yakutia

At the Russian Antarctic station "Vostok", where the lowest temperature record was recorded on the planet (-89.2 ⁰С), special people live. Prepared morally and physically, they agree to live and work in such conditions for a certain period and for a worthy reward. And where there is the coldest city in the world, people live all the time, and it is difficult to hope that their salary is so high that it can compensate for extreme conditions ...

The coldest republic

For the fact that they are officially considered residents of the coldest place on earth, the inhabitants of several settlements are arguing, and all of them are located in the same region of Russia - in Yakutia. It is possible to differentiate the title of the coldest city in the world, proceeding from various formal interpretations, but it is unfair to take the title of the coldest republic from the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) .

The capital of the cold

On the river Lena there is a city that occupies the third place in the huge Far Eastern district in terms of population . In Yakutsk there are about 300 thousand people, and this number has been growing lately. The Yakut population of the surrounding settlements, many migrants from Central Asia and China are moving to the capital of the republic.

Visitors are not afraid of the cold weather. The average January air temperature in Yakutsk is -40 ° C, the record of cold is -64.4 ° С, sometimes snow falls in June, spring and summer are short-lived, like the life of a moth. At the same time, the annual temperature amplitude is the largest on the planet and exceeds a hundred degrees. Short summer maximum can reach the same forty degrees, but with a plus sign. And yet, short hot days can not imbue heat Yakut land, and it is Yakutsk - the coldest city in the world by the recognition of those exotic lovers who get to the banks of the Lena in winter.

This city is the largest inhabited locality in the permafrost zone. Here, much different specifically from cities located in zones with a less aggressive climate. It is built here in a special way (it's impossible to bring a common foundation under the house: bottom is ice), lay communications in their own way, lay the road surface.

But the federal authorities should pay more attention to the frost-resistant Siberian republic, take care that people do not leave these extremely cold places. Some Yakut diamonds are enough to gradually appear people, taking away from the state and in general, Russian control this area.

Pole of cold

According to some information, a hundred years ago in Oymyakon the air temperature was measured - 82 ⁰С. Given that the village is 741 meters above sea level, and the Antarctic station Vostok is five times higher, the Yakut settlement owns a record of the minimum temperature on the planet, even if the official minimum is -68.3 ⁰С.

Remoteness from the ocean, location in the basin, where cold air masses are flowing from the surrounding space, make Oymyakon really the coldest place on Earth where people live constantly, but it is not the coldest city in the world. By the status in the city should live about a thousand, and in this village there are about 450 residents.

Record holder in all respects

But in another Yakut settlement - Verkhoyansk - 1150 people live. The city with the coldest winter is also one of the smallest settlements of the Russian Federation with a city status.

The official temperature minimum is -67.8 ⁰С, the average January low is -48.3 ⁰С, frosts are possible at any time of the year, even in July. At the same time, a huge contrast of the highest and lowest temperatures during the year, typical for the climate of these harsh places, and the amount of precipitation makes Verkhoyansk look like some African desert.

It is not surprising that long ago those who protested against the state power referred to the settlement. The first to recognize such a potential of Verkhoyansk was Alexander II, who referred here to "cool down" the participants of the Polish uprising in 1863. It was political exiles who were the first intellectuals and simply educated people who established regular scientific observation of the weather. They also recorded low temperatures, unprecedented throughout the vast empire.

The dispute between Verkhoyansk and Oymyakon about which city is the coldest of all continues to this day, causing the locals to have a purely sporting interest. More important is another: is it possible to resist the natural elements so that people living in such harsh conditions do not feel defective, that they fully lived, and did not survive, fighting with mighty nature.
