Neutral - is it like? Meaning and examples

It's no secret that now there is a fashion for Anglicisms and generally foreign words. There is a fashion, but not everyone is still in the trend, not everyone is accustomed to it, so a fair question arises: "is neutral - is it like?". Also people can be interested, and why not use the Russian replacement of the same word? We answer both questions and give concrete examples.

Variety of meanings

To uncover the secret of adverbs, one must turn to the adjective, and then everything will become clear. The adjective "neutral" has five meanings, two of which are special. We will concentrate first on common ones. So:

  1. The neutral is the one who stays away. And it does not matter at all about what is at issue - about the struggle on the political Olympus or about the banal dispute over tastes. There are people in the world who are not interested in these topics.
  2. Neutral subject of conversation, which does not directly concern anyone, but at the same time may be of interest to many.
  3. Neutral - something that does not contain any useful or harmful qualities, and does not have either beneficial or harmful effects. There is an opinion that as a medicine, calcium is harmless and no benefit from it. This, of course, is a delusion. Calcium can be both beneficial and harmful - depending on the dosage, but this does not apply to our topic, but it perfectly characterizes yet another meaning of the word "neutral".
  4. Neutral in chemistry is one that does not give any reaction.
  5. Neutral in physics is one that does not contain any charge.

Based on these data, you can understand, neutrally - it's like? But for clarity, it is better to give an example.

Disciples and time distortion

Many people know the story. The schoolboy sits at the lesson of geometry and the shooter does not want to creep forward to the end of the lesson, so that the tangents, cotangents and cosines will end sooner, whether they are unsuccessful. But time is ruthless! It froze! Of course, this is true if the child prefers literature.

If the situation is reversed, then a born mathematician or physicist thinks when this completely endless analysis of "Onegin" and Tatyana's contradictory feelings towards the protagonist ends. Time behaves for these students equally meanly - it does not want to speed up its run and bring the bell closer.

And now imagine that both students were in the biology class, and again the minutes and seconds became themselves. 45 minutes is 45 minutes, not forever. What does this mean? Both students are biologically neutral. From this lesson they are "neither hot nor cold", but certainly still want to go home quickly. In other words, it is clear now, is neutral - is it like?

A synonym for the adjective "neutral"

As it is not difficult to understand, everything depends on the context. In accordance with the values given above, we propose a list of substitutions:

  1. If it is a question of a dispute or political struggle, then the definitions are best: "disinterested", "apolitical", "indifferent", "indifferent".
  2. When it comes to the topic of conversation between people, there are no single substitutions. When there is a need to reduce the degree and translate the conversation into a calm channel, then choose a "less acute" or "more general" topic.
  3. The third value is simpler. In this case they say: "harmless", "useless".
  4. When it comes to science, it's hard to talk about synonyms; rather, you need to think about illustrations and specific concepts of that branch of knowledge that is meant.

In any case, we hope that this will satisfy those who want to know the synonym for the word "neutral".

Why not use the Russian replacement for the definition of "neutral" now?

This is a complex question and ambiguous. And the matter is not at all in fashion for foreign words, but that in some branches of knowledge, for example, in physics and chemistry, the adjective "neutral" fixes a certain concept, and the latter can not be replaced. In this case, in order to explain the phenomenon, one would have to resort to commenting, and this, in turn, would heavily load the text.

By the way, this clarifies why in some sciences an international language has been formed. In other words, there are a lot of terms in the scientific environment that were formed with the help of tracing paper.

But back to the topic. The meaning of the word "neutral" with its diversity greatly saves time for both the speaker and the writer, and therefore is in such demand. And so, of course, our history knows examples of how people tried to forcibly russify some foreign words and throw "the borrowed" and "foreign" ones, which were long ago assimilated in the language, with the shame of the Russian language. Who needs an example, let him remember AS Shishkov and his campaign, as well as Pushkin's poignancy on this score.

And what in the end? Taoist wisdom teaches: it is necessary to treat everything indifferently, that is, neutrally. "It's like?" - the question arises by itself. Especially not be upset and not happy. And the language, if necessary, will purify itself from false borrowings, for it is a system, and it, in turn, is inclined to self-organization. Therefore, there is no need to worry about the "great and mighty".
