How to cover the oven so that it does not crack: recommendations

Stove heating is still a very popular way of heating private houses. Accordingly, all the issues related to this process are very relevant today. Most often, the furnace breaks down due to the presence of a large number of cracks, which make its operation unsafe, because through them carbon monoxide penetrates into the room. Faced with such troubles, the owners of private homes wonder: "What and how to cover the oven, so as not to crack?" It is this problem that we will pay attention to in this article.

Reasons for failure of the furnace

Before searching for the best way to solve the problem, it is necessary to determine the causes of cracks. It can be:

• poor quality of the solution used;

• violation of finishing technology;

• Shrinkage of a brick structure;

• uneven heating;

• non-observance of the rules for operating the furnace.

If the oven sagged because of an incorrectly filled foundation, during the fire from all the cracks, smoke will pour, the doors will cease to close tightly, and the brick will gradually begin to deteriorate. If such problems are found, the entire structure should be immediately disassembled, the foundation reinforced and laid back again. However, in some cases it is possible to do without radical measures. The fact is that a small shrinkage of the furnace in the first couple of years is considered quite normal, and if it is a question of small cracks, it is enough simply to fix them correctly.

All other reasons can be easily eliminated, it is important only to understand how to cover the oven, so as not to crack.

Define the extent of damage

Before you get down to business, you should consider the damage and determine the scope of work. If small cracks appeared on the surface of the furnace (albeit in large quantities), to remove them, you need to remove the lining and clean the bricks from the plaster. When all the trim is removed, you can proceed to cover the slots. At this stage, everyone is wondering what kind of solution to cover up the stove so that it does not crack.

For these purposes, one of the following mixtures can be used:

• from clay and sand;

• from special grouts for ovens;

• from chamotte clay;

• from furnace glue.

Can not decide how to cover the oven so that it does not crack? Consider each option separately.

A mixture of clay and sand

Filling cracks with clay mortar is the easiest and most economical way to restore the furnace. At the same time, the quality of repairs will be no worse than with the use of newfangled and expensive materials.

For these purposes, you can take absolutely any clay, the main thing is that it had as few impurities as possible. Quality raw materials after soaking should be oily, homogeneous and plastic. Before coating the oven with clay (so that the surface of the hearth does not crack later), pay attention to the special features of the preparation of this solution.

How to make a putty from clay

Mixing of the mixture is carried out in several stages.

1. Before mixing clay with sand, it should be soaked in warm water for at least 12 hours.

2. Wet mortar should be carefully kneaded and break all formed lumps. In this state the clay is much better connected with sand.

3. To prepare the working mixture it is recommended to take 4 parts of clay and 2 parts of sand. The last component should be as clean and pre-sifted as possible. The volume of the liquid depends on the moisture content of all components.

4. If you do not plan to whiten the stove, add lime to the kneading step. All components are mixed to the consistency of sour cream. The final mixture is covered with a polyethylene film and left for 12 hours.

5. The retarded solution is re-mixed. To check if there is enough water in it, take putty in the palm of your hand and roll it into the ball. If it begins to crack when squeezing, add more water.

6. The furnace should be slightly heated, water cracks with water, after which it is possible to start covering.

7. To prevent the appearance of new cracks in the clay can be added to the straw, but a more reliable way is the use of plaster mesh. If you apply a clay solution on an oven that is clogged with such material, it will be possible to forget about cracks for a long time.

Chamotte Clay

Very often, chamotte clay is used for the restoration of old furnaces . This material is characterized by fire resistance, therefore, the furnaces finished with its help are reliable and durable.

You can buy this kind of clay in any construction market. It is sold in bags of 20 kg and is not at all expensive. The working solution is made by strictly following the instructions on the package.

Grout

To cover the brick oven you can buy a special grout. In shops there are various compositions which are made for these purposes. Just worth noting that this option will cost you quite expensive, but nevertheless for facing furnaces and fireplaces it is optimal.

If you can not afford the purchase of a specialized staff - prepare it at home. To do this, you need the following components:

• Clay;

• sand;

• water;

• Straw;

• salt.

Clay should be kneaded well, filled with water and set aside for 12 hours. After the specified time, the necessary amount of sand should be added to the mixture. In the process of kneading the two components to them gradually added finely chopped straw and salt. Clay and sand are taken in a ratio of 4: 1, while for every 4 buckets of clay add about 50 kg of straw and a pack of salt.

The resulting composition is able to withstand a temperature of more than 1000 degrees.

Adhesive for furnaces

To ensure that the stove does not crack in the future, heat-resistant glue can be used to repair it. It belongs to the category of finished materials for decoration of fireplaces, which are sold on construction sites. Its main qualities include resistance to high temperatures and durability.

The composition of this adhesive mixture includes chamotte powder and fire resistant varieties of cement. To date, there are two types of glue - plastic and hard.

The first option is used to seal the slots, and the second is used for plastering the entire surface of the furnace.

The main advantage of oven glue is very fast drying, so in large quantities, the solution should not be kneaded.

Technology of work

When the material for the restoration of the heating structure is already selected, it's time to figure out how to properly cover the oven (so that the lining and the brick itself do not crack).

The method of applying putty is selected depending on the type of solution.

So, if you decide to eliminate the cracks with a homemade mixture of clay and sand, the process will not cause you special difficulties.

1. To begin with, the brick is cleaned of the old finishing material and plaster.

2. Next, the oven should be slightly heated and shed the resulting cracks with water. This is necessary so that the dry brick does not absorb the moisture from the putty, because in this case it will lose all its properties.

3. Now you can start closing the holes. First, the solution must be tightly pushed into the cracks, and the remainders should be smeared on the surface with an even layer. Work can be done with bare hands, since this compound is absolutely harmless.

4. The final stage will be the plastering of the external surfaces.

Note that the furnace can be heated only after the final drying of the solution!

Now let's look at how to cover the oven (so it does not crack) with heat-resistant glue. This process is almost identical to the previous one, but differs in that after covering the cracks with a plastic compound, the whole surface of the furnace is treated with solid varieties of glue-resistant fire-resistant mixtures.

Since the glue dries less than 30 minutes, on the same day you can proceed with the decorative finishing of the oven.

In this article, we examined what and how to cover the oven, so that neither the structure nor the lining would crack. In conclusion, I want to note that even the best and expensive refractory compounds can not protect your furnace from the appearance of cracks. Here the main role is played neither by the quality of the material, but by the strict observance of the technology of construction and repair of the heating structure. Do your work deliberately and leisurely, and then your oven will last you for many years.
