Arkharovsky House

The Central House of Scientists on Prechistenka is built on a territory that in old times was called Chertolia. The street got its name after 1658, when it became traditional to go through it on Orthodox holidays, passing from the Kremlin to the Novodevichy Convent. The first mansion, in place of the current House of Scientists, appeared in 1716 and was built by Colonel SI Sukin, how exactly his house looked - it is not known. In 1792, the mansion became the property of IP Arkharov, who received the post of Governor-General of Moscow from the hands of Paul I. Before the Revolution

In the beginning of 1900, at the request of Konshina, the house was rebuilt according to the project of architect A. O Gunst. The mansion got a front porch, a fountain started working in the garden. An interesting innovation was a half-height of two stories high, which housed a winter garden with an atrium and a light lantern. The first and second floors were identical in area - about 800 square meters. At the first level, there were 15 rooms, and on the second level there were luxurious ceremonial rooms and hostess's apartments.

The technical equipment of the mansion was one of the best - water and sewage systems were installed, a system of exhaust vacuum cleaners was installed. Marble decoration was delivered from Italy, plumbing was issued from England. Konshina died in 1914, the mansion inherited to his nephew's wife, and then to her children. At the insistence of the guardian of the minor heirs, the house was sold for 400 rubles to the adviser AI Putilov. In 1917 the house was nationalized.

In the thirties, the architects of the Vesnin brothers developed a project in which an entrance hall and a wardrobe were added to the old mansion on the first floor, a hall with a foyer appeared on the second floor, and on the third there was a balcony with a hall and several technical rooms. The next reconstruction took place at the turn of the 1970s-1980s - changes were made in the location of the premises on the ground floor, as well as restoration work in the front suite, which is a historical part of the building.

At the present stage, the House of Scientists at Prechistenka is one of the centers of the cultural and scientific life of the capital. The CDU team organizes and supports the work of 26 scientific sections, several creative studios, a symphony orchestra, children's groups and much more. The CDU hosts traditional Friday meetings, where the entire intellectual and creative color of the capital gathers.
