Separate definitions and undefined

In oral speech, intonation and pauses are used to separate its individual fragments. In writing for this purpose serve as a dash, comma, semicolon. Most often on the letter we meet isolated definitions. The role of the definitions is played by participles and adjectives.

Separate can:

  • Single participles and verbal adjectives, if they stand in position after the word being determined. When you are in the middle of the sentence, commas are placed on both sides, for example: The forest, drenched and chilled, groaned under the gusts of the wind. If the isolated definitions are at the beginning or end of the sentence, they are separated by one comma: A girl appeared dancing in the street, dancing and laughing.
  • Sacraments and verbal adjectives with dependent words, provided that they also are after the noun being determined: The sea, excited by the wind, rumbled dully. The number of commas depends on the position of the distinguished definition: at the beginning and at the end - one comma, in the middle - with two commas.
  • With some constructions, the sentence may lack a definable noun, to which separate definitions belong. However, the "lost" word is easily restored from the context. Commas are arranged according to the rules: Look, rather, black slipped into the bushes.

In turn, isolation does not occur if:

  • The definitions in the sentence are before the word being defined: The brother hurrying to the morning train left for the station in advance;
  • Definitions are located in the sentence after the noun, but it does not need this definition: This painting was written in a manner very original and even something remarkable;
  • The determinate noun performs the function of the subject, and the definition is related in meaning not only to him, but also to the predicate, since Is included in its composition: The lake at my feet was quite dark and dumb because of the cloudy sky.
  • There are other limitations in which separate definitions are not.

Agreed Definitions

Definitions can be either agreed or not agreed. Agreed, they are called because they take the grammatical forms of the genus, the number and case of that word, usually the noun to which they belong.

A separate, agreed definition, referring to a personal pronoun , is allocated by commas in any positions: It, supported on both sides, barely got to the bed. Cheerfully whistling something, he quickly approached. In such cases, as a rule, definitions are common.

The coordinated definitions of the noun can be separated if there are other words in the sentence: Warm and clear , a sunbeam stroked through the window.

Homogeneous definitions and their isolation

Like any homogeneous members of a sentence, homogeneous definitions denote similar characteristics of one object, refer to one definable word, a writing union can be inserted between them . Or different objects call their distinctive properties, qualities, attributes.

If there are isolated homogeneous definitions in the sentence, then there are no alliances between them, for example: Before our eyes, the city spread far and clear in the night with clear, iridescent lights.

Most often, homogeneous definitions are adjectives-epithets. Thanks to them, an artistic image is created in the text , and speech acquires an aesthetic load. As an expressive speech technique, a number of homogeneous definitions expressing a feature and arranged in a sentence in a certain sense sequence of the trait increase can form a semantic gradation: A bright, iridescent, perfectly happy state did not leave me all day.
