Gorishnie Plavni - new toponym on the map of Ukraine

A year ago even many Ukrainians did not know about this tiny city on the Dnieper bank. But today the glory of him spread throughout Ukraine and even beyond. And all this thanks to the new name of the city - Gorishnie Plavni. We suggest you also make a small trip to this famous village.

Gorishni Plavni - what does this mean?

When the city was called Komsomolsk, it was just a point on the map of Ukraine. The geographical position of this settlement is peculiar, because it is located away from important highways and railways. Therefore, foreigners came here very, very rarely. But everything changed in 2016.

In 2015, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a package of laws on decommunization - a policy aimed at dismantling the Soviet heritage in Ukraine. According to the adopted laws, a number of settlements of the country should be renamed. So, the city of Dnepropetrovsk became the Dnieper, Kirovograd - Kropivnitskiy, Dneprodzerzhinsk - Kamensky, etc. But the small and inconspicuous Komsomolsk turned into Gorishnie Plavni.

The translation into Russian of this toponym may be as follows: "upper plavni" (floodplains - a flooded part of the floodplain or delta of the river). It should be noted that most of the residents of the city were categorically opposed to such renaming. The Komsomol city council tried to preserve the former name for the city. In the end, it was Kiev who decided the fate of the name of the settlement. The new name for Komsomolsk was offered by the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory. It was approved by the decision of the Verkhovna Rada.

Newly mown Goryushniye Plavni immediately became the subject of active discussions and discussions throughout the country. And the name itself became the foundation for the creation of numerous Internet memes. Soon interest to a small town grew so much that they even began to carry out excursions from Kiev.

Modest city of Komsomolsk: how it all began

In the early sixties, on the left bank of the Dnieper, the grandiose construction of yet another giant of the iron and steel industry began. "There is Komsomolsk-on-Amur, will be Komsomolsk-on-the-Dnieper!" - such headlines were dazzled in 1961 by all Soviet newspapers. People from different parts of the former USSR gathered for a large-scale construction project in the Poltava region .

Soon here began to operate Poltava GOK, which worked on iron ore from two local deposits. And next to it grew on the Dnieper sands compact, cozy and green city of Komsomolsk. Today it is home to over 50 thousand people. By the way, earlier in the place of Komsomolsk there was a village called Gorishnie Plavni. He and several other villages were demolished during the construction of the plant.

The city on the banks of the Dnieper is surrounded by the floods of a mighty river, magnificent pine forests and picturesque quarries and sedimentation tanks. This is an ambiguous neighborhood. The surface of the city is flat, like a table, because it is located on sands and alluvial soils.
