Chicago Airports: list, description and reviews

A huge and beautiful metropolis on the shores of Lake Michigan, Chicago is rightly called the capital of the Midwest. It occupies the third place in terms of the number of inhabitants (after New York and Los Angeles), is a large industrial, cultural and financial center. With a population of 2,722,553 people, it is the largest transport hub of the United States, and Chicago airports receive planes daily from 60 foreign countries and domestic airlines.

The workload of all three airports of this city shows how important this is an important and popular in North America population center.

O'Hare Airport Description

In the north-west district of Chicago is O'Hare's largest international airport . Every day more than 2,600 take-offs and landings take place in it, which makes it the busiest in the world, so you can not call an easy job here.

This airport is located 27 km from the city center. Here during the Second World War, Douglas plant was built to produce aircraft, but in the time of peace, 180,000 m 2 , which he occupied, were freed. The administration of Chicago decided to develop the flying equipment built during the manufacture of the airfield, and in 1949 it was named after the famous military pilot, Ed Edward O'Hara. This name is also in our time.

Airport Ohara (Chicago) went a long way, which included such changes:

  • By 1955 he began to accept commercial flights;
  • In 1958 an international terminal was built;
  • By 1962, the expansion of the airport had ended, and it became the busiest in the world;
  • In 1965, 10 million passengers were transported through it;
  • 1997 - a new record was set, and the number of people who arrived at O'Hare Airport every year exceeded 70 million;
  • In our time, its terminals allow up to 80 million people a year.

This giant is connected with the city by a small piece of land only 70 m wide, which allows the city municipality to manage it.

Terminals

To date, Chicago airports do not yet fully cope with the huge number of passengers who fly to Illinois every year or who are traveling in transit.

Currently, there are 4 terminals in O'Hare, but the controllers of this airport terminal are still considered the most loaded in the world. In the near future, it is planned to build two more terminals, for which the city authorities will have to move almost 3,000 people.

In this airport there are 186 exits to the terminals No. 1, 2, 3 and 5 and 9 rooms for the reception of passengers. Each of them has its own halls and transitions between them:

  • Terminal No. 1 consists of 2 rooms and 53 exits. Through it served by airlines: in the hall of United Airlines, which makes flights to Atlanta, Amsterdam, Beijing, Boston, Dallas, Paris, London, Los Angeles, New York, Singapore and other cities. In Hall C passengers are waiting for flights to Albany, Omaha, Syracuse, to Austin, Cleveland, Kansas City, Portland, Indianapolis, Milwaukee and hundreds of other cities (United Express).

Interestingly: this terminal was designed and built in 1987, and before that international flights served the building erected in 1955.

  • Terminal No. 2 was built in 1962. Today, modified, it accommodates 2 halls with 30 exits. From it departures are made to Canada and by internal lines.
  • Terminal No. 3 has 77 passes to the runways in four halls. This American Airlines hub serves domestic airlines.
  • Terminal number 5 is an international hall with 21 exits.

In addition to transporting passengers, Chicago airports provide freight services, for which each of them created separate for this zone.

O'Hare Airport Infrastructure

Runways at this airport are at a disadvantageous location, as they intersect with each other. This causes a threat of collision of aircraft, especially with poor visibility.

At the present time, their re-equipment is being done, for which the two bands have been closed, in order to build 4 new ones instead of them, running parallel to each other. Given the load on the airport, we can say that this is a titanic work, which requires maximum concentration of both controllers and pilots.

This is the airport of Chicago. The scheme of its reorganization inspires hope that in a short time, with its new safe runways, up to 3,800 planes will take off daily. While there is a struggle of communities that will have to move to new places of residence, there is a hope that a consensus will be found and the airport will be expanded.

In addition, all Chicago airports are required to comply with the noise reduction program requirements and use only 1 runway between 24.00 and 6.00.

Transportation of a huge number of passengers inside the O'Hare terminal terminal is carried out with the help of special wagons that take people to all terminals from the parking lot. The total length of the route is 4.3 km.

Midway Airport

Midway Airfield was built in 1923, only 13 km from Chicago. His only one at that time was the band used to receive aircraft carrying mail. In 1927, he received the status of an airport, and a year later expanded to 12 hangars and four runways.

To date, the main carrier that used it, is Southwest Airlines. Through it annually passes more than 20 million people, and it by right is considered the second largest in Illinois.

Through 3 terminals with 43 gates daily departures are carried out on such routes:

  • Southwest Airlines - in Orlando, Cancun, Oklahoma City, Albuquerque, Denver, Buffalo, Boston, Phoenix, Philadelphia and dozens of others.
  • Delta Air Lines to Atlanta.
  • Frontier Airlines to Trenton and Wilmington.
  • Volaris - in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Guanajuato.

Like other airports in Chicago, Midway is very busy and takes the 3rd place in the ranking of the busiest airports in the US.

Airport Exeter

This Chicago airport is of regional importance and at one time was called "Paul Gaultier". In 1953, he had just one runway on 40 acres of land. It was purchased by George Priester, landscaped for 30 years, and today it is the third busiest airport in Chicago, passing through itself annually more than 200,000 passengers.

Online scoreboard

For clients, an interactive internet scoreboard for the Chicago airport has been developed, whereby they can find out the time of arrival and departure of the aircraft, as well as its status at this time. O'Hare as the largest airport in Chicago (reviews about it the most controversial) is always heavily loaded, so it's possible to postpone the departure time. Such a service, as an online scoreboard, will allow passengers to be aware of such changes.
