Why do brakes brake when braking? Causes of squeaking, repair or replacement of brake pads

Sooner or later every car owner wonders: why do brakes brakes when braking? This sound can often be heard in traffic jams. And even on new cars the brakes sometimes creak. What to do in this case? Let's try to understand.

Where does the creak come from?

First, let's look at the brake system. Its main working component is the shoe. It creates the braking force, interacting with the disk. Outwardly it is a metal case with a friction material fixed on it . The latter is made of a complex composition, which includes:

  • Ceramics.
  • Reinforcing elements.
  • Rubber (synthetic).
  • Organic and mineral fillers.

Often the answer to the question of why the brakes creak when braking is hidden in the pads. Perhaps it turned out to be defective or substandard, or one of the above components is not compatible with the material of the disc, because of which a characteristic sound arises.

Weather

One of the common reasons why brakes creak when braking is increased humidity. Often during a rain on the surface of these elements, condensation accumulates. Because of this, there is a squeak of brakes. The reasons can also be hidden in the support itself. The creak appears as a result of vibrations of the pads about it. In the cabin you hear not only sound, but also tapping, flowing into vibration. There is a knock during braking. If these symptoms are observed after the recent replacement of the pads, most likely, the support mounts loose due to temperature fluctuations. To do this, use a hexagonal wrench to tighten the mounting bolt. If you look at it directly (from the side of the street), it is on the inside. After that, the problem disappears.

How to eliminate sounds

If the problem lies in a poor-quality material or its incompatibility with the disk, the only way out is to replace the pads with new ones. It is not worth saving and buying cheap analogs. Having saved on cheap pads, "as a gift" you will get an endless creaking, and possibly tapping. However, the latter arise even if there are scuffs on the disk itself. The smallest millimeter can create an incredible knock at braking - the speed of the wheel and the weight of the car will do their job. The pad will simply crumble, quite nervously caressing the car owner. And even new branded elements will not be saved. In this situation, you need a disk replacement. To avoid any disagreement, the pads and the disk should be purchased from the same manufacturer.

Replacement did not help

Motorists complain that even after this operation the problem does not disappear. The disc is in the normal state, knocking does not occur during braking. How to be? The fact is that after installing new shoes, they need time for adaptation (running-in). The given process makes no more than 400 kilometers of run. It is recommended to perform an active and intensive braking (not to the detriment of overheating of the system). If this also did not help, remove the wheel and disassemble the support, perhaps the dirt got into it, because of which the whole problem arises. Although the design of the support is such that the dust there almost does not penetrate. But to exclude this factor is not worth it.

By the way, some cars already use antiskrip plates from the plant. They are small metal pads that by their thickness eliminate the existing gap between the shoe and the support in the place of their contact.

Fast Drying

If the creaking occurred in rainy weather, it is recommended to dry the brakes. This is done very simply - at the speed you need to press the pedal several times. Thus, the temperature on the disc will increase, and all the condensate will disappear.

Anti-Scrape Paste

To the car owner did not ask why brakes creak when braking, experts recommend using special pastes when installing new shoes. This composition should be applied to the end and back of the metal lining. It is forbidden to apply paste on the working surface of the disc or pads.

Brake Pressure Regulator

This element serves to distribute the braking forces between the front and rear wheels of the car. When you press the pedal, the main load falls on the front pads. In bad weather, in this situation, the machine will simply lose control. The brake pressure regulator distributes the load so that all 4 wheels stop with a uniform force. If you exclude the design of this element, the wheels lock as follows: first brake the rear, then - the front brakes. In the snow or rain, such a car can go yuzom - it will be unmanageable. The absence of a regulator significantly affects not only the overall safety, but also the wear of the pads, which will occur unevenly.

How to replace the pads?

For this we need a set of tools: a jack, a balloon wrench for unscrewing wheel bolts, hexahedrons and a hammer with a screwdriver. First, bolts are broken and that part of the car rises, from which side the pads will change. Having removed a wheel, we visually estimate a condition of brake hoses, anthers and pipelines. They should not have a liquid flow and be deformed. If there is a crack on the hose, it must be replaced - this part will not last for long. How much do the brake pads cost? They can be purchased at a price of 1000 rubles per set (4 - for the two front calipers).

So, first you need to squeeze the brake piston with a thin lever. Then, the bolts of the caliper bracket are loosened. On some cars it is not fixed, then just remove the hand. Then it is necessary to knock out the guide pins. This can be done by attaching a screwdriver or hairpin to them (a long bolt of smaller diameter). Striking the hammer slowly shift the upper and lower pin from the place. The support can be pushed aside and the pads removed. In their place we put new ones. Do not forget to treat the metal pads with a special paste. Reassemble in the reverse order.

Should I swap then?

If the brake hoses are not removed, this operation is not needed. Air will not go into the system while replacing the pads. By the way, the liquid itself (in view of its ability to absorb moisture) must be changed every 2 years or 60 thousand kilometers.

So, we found out how much the brake pads cost and why they creak. As you can see, it is quite possible to change them with your own hands. The cost of similar works on the SRT is 1000-1200 rubles (almost the price of new pads).
