What is the "Thousand Island" sauce?

The "Thousand Island" sauce is made from mayonnaise and ketchup (or some other sweetened tomato sauce) with the addition of eggs and vinegar. Its classical version should have a sweet spicy taste.

At home, a hard-boiled egg is added to the sauce, crushed through a fine sieve. The named ingredient is not often found in recipes these days, but previously it was a common thickener.

This cooking technique, like a very fine wiping of eggs, can improve not only the taste, but also the texture of the dish.

History of the origin of the sauce

The "Thousand Island" sauce has so many versions of origin. So, allegedly he was invented at resorts in the Thousand Islands area, in the most northern areas of New York State in the USA and in the south of Ontario in Canada, in the very beginning of the 20th century.

According to another version, it was first prepared at the resorts of New Hampshire around the same time. According to both variants, the sauce was conceived as an upscale meal that was served with fresh herbs and was designed for those who could afford "summer" products at any time of the year.

Despite its origin, the "Thousand Island" sauce in the 70s of the last century was launched into mass production, and today it can be found in all salad bars and fast foods. At the same time, during industrial production, numerous preservatives and artificial flavorings began to enter into its composition, which made its taste very different from the original one. If you cook it at home, you will get a classic product.
