When Ivan grew up, he was accepted as a student at the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, where he studied in the landscape class. The first work, which was presented to the audience by the artist Aivazovsky, was called "Etude air over the sea." Already in this work, critics realized that a bright future awaited the young painter. He is sent to the Crimea with the task of writing a whole series of local landscapes. Later, Ivan Konstantinovich goes to Italy, where he carefully studies classical painting.

Upon his return to his homeland, Aivazovsky becomes an academician and heads to the Main Naval Headquarters. There he must draw the Baltic species. The young artist happened to take part in some military operations, his naval battle scenes, one might say, were written from nature.
