"Tsimbelin": reviews are extremely contradictory

"Tsimbeline" reviews are called one of the most mysterious plays of Shakespeare, she very rarely appears on the stage. Initially, the product was included in the posthumous edition of the author's plays, but took the last place there. Thus, it appeared that it was the last creation of the great playwright, not the "Storm" or the chronicle "Henry VIII".

Last disappointed look

There is an opinion that Shakespeare did not write Cymbelin. In particular, authorship is sometimes attributed to the Earl of Oxford, Edward de Vere. On the other hand, the play is called the careless joke of a genius who created a crazy mix of the plot lines of all his comedy and tragedy works. In fact, in a work whose genre is extremely difficult to determine, you can recognize the motifs of "King Lear", "Romeo and Juliet", "Troil and Cressida", "Othello", "Winter Fairy Tale" and "Twelfth Night". It is unlikely that Shakespeare has set himself the task of parodizing himself, rather, the play is the disappointed last view of the creator of the world around him. Perhaps, therefore, to adapt the plot, composed several centuries ago, to modern realities is so difficult. And yet, for the film adaptation boldly took the director Michael Almereida. He decided to adapt Shakespeare's "Tsymbelin", the brief content of which became the basis of the plot line of the picture.

Plot

Imogen (Dakota Johnson) - a beautiful rose "Tsimbelin" (Emily Blunt, however, according to film critics, would have more organically integrated into this image) - the daughter of the criminal biker "king" Tsimbelin, secretly concludes a marriage with the ward of her father Postum (Penn Bedbli) . Since the father had long ago decided to extradite Imogen to his stepchild, Kloten (Anton Yelchin), he expelled Postum from the gang and the city, and locked the disobedient daughter in the house. This situation was used by Yakimo (Ethan Hawke), an old friend of Postum. He consciously concludes with a guy wager that in a short time he will be able to seduce his wife and provide significant evidence of her infidelity. At this time, the insidious little wife of the "king" (Mila Jovovich) is going to send her husband to the next world, poisoning him so that the gang could be led by her son.

The scriptwriter and director Michael Almereida (originally a documentary) clearly has a considerable weakness for Shakespeare's work - he has already made two films for his plays. His version of the adaptation of "Hamlet" is also shot in the popular modernized manner: Claudius is the manager of an advanced corporation, Hamlet comments on the events of his life and conducts a video diary. By the way, Hamlet's role was played by the same Ethan Hawke, who plays the role of the troubled cunning Yakimo in "Cimbelin." He pokes fun at the simple-minded Posthumus and pushes to test the faithfulness of the wife of Imogene.

The screen Postum is either dumbfounded, or so infantile. But he is not a player, he is a card, which, along with other similar players, is played by the king with the queen, they also set trumps - all exactly as Shakespeare wrote. "Tsimbelin", which briefly resembles "The Twelfth Night" and "Othello", it is necessary to look personally. All retellings will not dot the "i". This is a very interesting experiment, the adaptation of Shakespeare's play. Returning to the controversial issue of the relevance of Shakespeare's works in a chaotic modernity, we can safely say: Almereida proved this importance and vitality.

Without energy

Having taken up the difficult play "Tsimbelin" (reviews often emphasize this fact), in which the ends do not always converge, the director and screenwriter in one person, Michael Almereida, attracted the real stars of the world cinema for the main roles, but he could not breathe Spark of life in the characters. The harsh and brutal Ed Harris, the roguish and quirky Ethan Hawke and the stately and beautiful Mila Jovovich attract the attention of the audience, but the performers of the main roles Dakota Johnson and Penn Badgley play uncertainly, there is not between them the same "chemistry". They do not have energy, their dialogues sound too dull, and the actions look illogical, deeds are unjustifiably stupid.

Essence and spirit of time

The work of the operator Tim Orr is praiseworthy, as well as the efforts of costumers, artists, decorators. The drama "Tsimbelin" (reviews of the film critics confirm this) is very atmospheric: the world of elderly bikers - pathos and cruel - is the perfect embodiment of the conflict between Rome and Britain. The history of old days was duly and convincingly transferred to our confused modernity. Abundance in the frame of gadgets, sexy shorts and motorcycle helmets looks old-fashioned, archaic, profaning the most important thing in the picture - the spirit and style of the time and the very meaning of modernization.

Qualitative, but controversial staging

The film screen of Michael Almereid was created not very accurately from the point of view of the film industry, but it is sufficiently competent in relation to the literary source - the play "Tsymbelin" (Shakespeare, most likely, would have been pleased). The film is a qualitatively made production in the spirit of "The Sons of Anarchy" with the romantic spirit of "Dangerous Illusion." Naturally, the director would do the work "Tsimbelin" (critical reviews often state this) by a traditional adaptation, costumed like "Romeo and Juliet" by Carlo Carlei or Franco Zeffirelli, the picture would definitely have been a huge success. And so, unfortunately, turned out to be a one-off film, which most will watch because of the impressive cast and the genius of Shakespeare's syllable.
