The Drama Theater named after Lomonosov (Arkhangelsk) has existed for a very long time. In his repertoire are performances not only for adults, but also for children. Spectators can see performances here both in classical works and in plays of contemporary authors.

History of the theater

The first attempt to organize a theater of drama (Arkhangelsk did not have then such institutions of culture) was undertaken in 1790. Ivan Romanovich von Leaven filed a petition to the capital, where he wrote that the city needed such kind of ideas, since they would be useful for the youth. In 1793 the construction of the theater was started. The building was built stone. But they did not finish it - the city authorities did not have money for this. Then a decree came from Petersburg, so that the unfinished building was given to the grain store.

In the 1840s, the intelligentsia of the city lost the hope of waiting for the authorities to build the theater. A donation was organized for the construction of a building for performances. In 1846 a wooden building appeared in the city with a hall for 650 seats. At first, only amateurs played here, and a year later professional artists arrived from Yaroslavl. In 1851 there was a fire, and the building of the theater suffered very badly. But the intelligentsia was so thirsty that plays were played in the city, that another room was bought for money received from insurers. It was purchased from the merchant Yermolin and was also affected by the fire, but less than the building of the theater. The city authorities and merchants-patrons helped in its restoration.

The intelligentsia placed high hopes on the Theater of Drama (Arkhangelsk). He was called to distract people from maps, drunkenness, gossip and other similar activities. His constant professional troupe was not, the performances were played by visiting artists and amateurs.

In 1931, a new building was built, in which the Drama Theater named after. Lomonosov (Arkhangelsk) is to this day. A professional troupe was assembled. The building of the theater survived two reconstructions. The first one lasted from 1964 to 1967. The second was completed in 2009.
