Territorial location of the Volgograd Region

This region is located in the European part of the Russian Federation and is part of the SFD. This region is located in the south-eastern part of the East European Plain.

On the territory of the Volgograd region there are two large rivers - the Volga and the Don. The Volga divides the region into two unequal parts: a large one - right bank, and a smaller one - left-bank. It is on the territory of the Volgograd region that the Volga and the Don approach each other as close as possible - about 70 km. This created the conditions for the formation of Volgodonskaya perevoloki in this place in ancient times. And in 1952 the famous Volga-Don Canal, which connected the waters of both rivers, was built.

The region is located in a temperate climatic zone with a temperate-continental type of climate. With the movement to the east, the continentality of the climate is intensifying. The main natural zone of the region is the steppe. In the north-west it passes into the forest-steppe, and in the east - to the semi-desert.

History of the region

To understand how the population of the Volgograd region was being formed, we should go deeper into history.

Since ancient times in the territory of the Volgograd region there were lands of various nomadic tribes: first Iranian-speaking, and then Turkic-speaking. One of the largest nomadic states that was formed on these lands was the Khazar Khaganate. In the tenth century this power was destroyed by the Russian prince Svyatoslav. After the Mongol-Tatar invasion in the XIII century, the region was included directly in the Golden Horde, and after its disintegration - into the Astrakhan Khanate and the Nogai Horde.

In the 16th century under Ivan the Terrible these territories became part of the Russian kingdom. Then the gradual settlement of the region by the Russians began. Over time, the right-bank part of the modern Volgograd region was included in the region of the Don Army.

After the victory of the October Revolution, in 1919, Tsaritsyno province was formed on the territory of the region with an administrative center in the city of Tsaritsyn (modern Volgograd). In 1925, the city of Tsaritsyn was renamed Stalingrad, and accordingly the name of the province was changed to Stalingrad. In 1928 Stalingrad province was abolished, and due to its association with the Astrakhan, Saratov and Samara provinces, the Lower Volga region was organized with its capital in Saratov. In the same year, the region received the status of the province. In 1932, the administrative center of the province was moved from Saratov to Stalingrad. In 1932-1933 there was a monstrous famine in these territories. In 1934 the region was divided into Stalingrad and Saratov. In 1936 the Stalingrad region was divided into the Stalingrad region and the Kalmyk ASSR.

It was in Stalingrad and its environs in 1942-1943. There was the most bitter battle of the Great Patriotic War, and possibly the entire Second World War. It was in her that the fate of the USSR was decided. The Red Army won a heavy but decisive victory over the troops of Hitlerite Germany.

In 1961, during the de-Stalinization, the city of Stalingrad was renamed Volgograd, and the region was renamed accordingly. After the collapse of the USSR in 1991, the Volgograd region became part of the Russian Federation, where it still remains.
