How do cities appear?

In the modern world, many cities with a large population. And very well, when the city is located on a large area, and it has a small density of residents. But if the territory of the metropolis is very limited? It also happens that the city is surrounded by sea and rocks, so its construction is directed upwards. At the same time, the number of inhabitants per square kilometer is actively increasing. And from a simple town quickly turns into a densely populated. This is exactly what Shanghai is.

The population of this metropolis is growing rapidly every year. This is the largest city in China, located in the east of the country in the Yangtze River Delta. It is an important cultural and financial center, as well as the largest seaport in Asia. Shanghai is divided into sixteen districts of urban subordination and one county.

Shanghai: Population and its location

Shanghai is the most densely populated city in China and one of the largest cities in the world. In it at the end of 2011 lived 23.47 million permanent residents, of which 9.35 million were visitors from other regions and another 14.12 million had a residence permit in Shanghai.

The population of Shanghai is mainly Chinese Han. In the city live 118 thousand people of small nationalities, of which 7 thousand Hui. In addition to Chinese citizens, there are approximately 160,000 foreigners in this city.

The official language of the city is the standard language of Putonghua, which is taught in educational institutions. However, communication in everyday life occurs more often in the Shanghai dialect of Shanghaihua. But this dialect is now less used. Shanghai is gradually turning into a shopping center of the world, where many workers from other provinces come, so the language of Putonghua is increasingly used in the city. There is even a social movement that wants to preserve the Shanghai dialect.

The population of Shanghai is located on the territory of the city is not very even. So, the most densely populated are the Pudong, Yangpu and Changning areas. The average population density in the city is 3706 people per square kilometer of the area.

Shanghai: the population and its growth

In 1843, Shanghai was opened to foreign trade, after which its population began to increase rapidly due to immigration. Most often people came here from the provinces of Zhejiang, Anhui, Guangdong and Jiangsu. Many refugees arrived in the city during the Taiping uprising. The cultural revolution caused the Shanghai residents to move to the provinces. In the 1990s, migrants from Australia, Japan and other countries appeared in Shanghai.

1992 was a period of market reforms later than in the southern provinces. Until then, most of the city's profits had been irretrievably sent to Beijing. The policy of openness and reform has attracted people to Shanghai from other provinces of China.

It should be noted that the Shanghai immigration law is quite tough, it is difficult to find a city residence permit, despite the current simplification of the rules. Every year, under the program of attracting professional staff, this permission is obtained for about twenty thousand people.

Shanghai - a large construction site in Asia

As in most other regions of the country, there is also a construction boom in Shanghai today. However, the differences of modern architecture of the city are in a unique style. So, the upper floors of many skyscrapers, where the restaurants are located, often have the form of flying saucers. Many of the currently erected buildings are high-rise residential buildings with different heights, design and color. Today the enterprises responsible for planning the development of Shanghai pay close attention to the formation of parks and green spaces in residential complexes in order to improve the quality of life of their population.

Shanghai modern again is the main center of communication of the whole country with the West. For example, an information center is open here, where Chinese and Western health institutions share their experiences. In Pudong erected buildings that are very similar to the residential and business districts of the cities of America and Europe. Nearby are the international hotel and shopping areas. Although the density of residents is very high, Shanghai is famous for its rather low crime rate and a welcoming attitude towards all foreigners.

Transport system in Shanghai

The city's transport system is modern. Compared to most other Chinese cities, the streets in Shanghai are kept clean. At the same time, it surpasses in quality of air many other large cities of China. Although, in comparison with other megacities of the planet, the Shanghai air is essentially polluted.

In Shanghai, public transport is actively developing: thirteen subway lines are operating in the city for 2010. By 2020, the introduction of ten more lines is planned. In Shanghai, there are also more than a thousand bus routes.

Here, by the way, is the oldest trolleybus system in the world, launched in 1914. In most of the world's megacities, trolleybuses did not appear at all until the 1960s and 1980s.

The problem of overpopulation in Shanghai and its solution

The density of the population of Shanghai is so great that numerous legends already add to this amazing fact. But in 2014 in the city there was a completely not made-up tragedy. On New Year's Eve, a lot of people gathered in one of the squares (about 300 thousand people). Soon on the square began a crowd and crush, which resulted in the death of 36 people.

Indeed, the city of Shanghai suffers greatly from this problem. Its population grew so rapidly that the authorities were forced to seriously engage in demographic policy. So, until 2014, the Shanghai people (like all other residents of China) lived on the principle of "One family - one child." In 2014 this severe rule was revised - some families were allowed to give birth to a second child.
