The philosopher of our time is Jacques van Dormel. Filmography and facts from life

The famous Belgian screenwriter and director Jaco van Dormel is the author of the most beautiful, extraordinary and truly unique films. His work does not just draw tightly to the screen, but makes the viewer think about global issues that can sometimes turn the world outlook.

On the Road to Cinematography

For the post of the creator of the spectacular films, Jacques van Dormel was not at a young age. In his teens he worked in the circus, playing the role of a clown on children's holidays. For Jaco it was a turning point: he realized that he should give joy to people, realized that he himself became happy by the smile of his neighbor. Therefore, he enters the Brussels National Higher School of Performing Arts at the Faculty of Film Production. Like all successful students of theater universities, there he began to shoot his first short films with a philosophical and comedic content. After completing his education in his homeland, Jacques van Dormel travels to Paris and goes there to Louis Lumiere's high school. After issuing the second diploma, the newly-made director starts creating his own full-length pictures, but does not stamp them one by one. Each scenario, each production, which Van Dormel works on, is a work of art that is created over the years.

First job

In 1991, a young 34-year-old and talented director, whose name is not yet known to the world, is the first film. Jaco van Dormel called him "Toto the Hero", and described there the tragic and very confusing story of two young people. According to the story from the burning maternity hospital it is possible to save two boys - Thomas and Alfred. Having grown up, only one of them becomes successful. Thomas, surrounded by problems and adversity, begins to think that the reason for his misfortunes is the substitution. He believes that Alfred just stole his fate. The premiere of this picture gave the creator world fame. The film received the "Golden Camera" prize at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as the César Award.

A masterpiece about which everyone forgot

Three years after the acclaimed premiere Jacques van Dormel presents in Cannes his new work - "The Day of the Eight." The plot, like last time, is built around two men whose fates are the opposites of each other. One of them is a businessman, at first glance, successful and prosperous. The second one suffers from Down's syndrome, but at the same time retains in his heart a positive and belief in good. In "The Eighth Day" Van Dormel leaves the viewer alone with the question: "Who of them is really happy, and who is truly unhappy?". This picture was presented in the nomination "the best male role", and the laurels were shared by Daniel Otoy and Pascal Duquesne.

13 years later

After a successful 1996, the world gradually began to forget about the genius of the Belgian director. Five years later, Jacquot began to work. He had a brilliant and very complex scenario in his head that included not only the destinies of people, but also such a global question as time, its essence and significance in the life of the universe. Over the new script, the work lasted 8 years, the creator was in search of the ideal actors, entourage and shooting places. And in 2009 the premiere - "Mr. Jacques van Dormel first worked with American actors, first made a film in English, for the first time the budget of his work was 37 million euros, which by Belgian standards is a fabulous figure. "Mr. Nobody" received the "Golden Ozell" and "Biograilm" awards in Cannes, in Venice he was in the category "Golden Lion". This picture was recognized by European critics as the best biographical production with a philosophical focus.

How would Bibily write Jaco van Dormel?

The filmography of this great Belgian director, screenwriter and producer is not too extensive. Zhako takes off his masterpieces rarely, but aptly, and in 2015 he's the next, namely - the fourth time we proved it. On the screen came a comedy titled "The Newest Testament," in which it is "not only about religion." Van Dormel showed us God, but not in the form of a gray-haired old man on a cloud, but in the guise of a grumpy uncle who lives in Brussels and constantly wears a horrible greasy dressing-gown. Moreover, the "Kingdom of God" is not a paradise in which only men rule. This is an ordinary apartment, where a family lives, led by the Creator-Father, stunned by his wife and two children-a son and daughter. The director admits that in this way he did not want to ridicule or offend the feelings of believers. He simply showed that authoritarianism and patriarchy are ridiculous foundations, by which society lives.

Interesting facts about Van Dormel

  • Zhako's life nearly broke off in the first minutes of his existence. He received a terrible birth trauma, after which he barely survived. That is why he accepts his being as a special gift and believes that he is not even worthy of it.
  • Van Dormel loves the city of Brussels. He lives there almost all his life and enjoys his gray rainy beauty. Quite often the director goes to the streets of the capital of Belgium to just take pictures of them.
