The Museum and Exhibition Center "Rabochy i Kolkhoznitsa" is a revived masterpiece by Mukhina

The exhibition center was opened on September 4, 2010, in a pedestal, on which the famous monument "Worker and Collective Farm Girl", created by Mukhina Vera Ignatyevna, stands proudly. In its parameters, the pavilion-pedestal corresponds to the pavilion of the Soviet Union, designed for a world exhibition held in Paris in 1937, for which a 24-meter sculpture weighing about 180 tons was intended. In the exhibition building can be more than a thousand people. The Museum and Exhibition Center "Rabochy and Kolhoznitsa" includes: exposition halls that occupy three floors and are updated according to the subject of exhibitions, a hall for various events and conferences, as well as a museum that clearly shows the history of the creation of the Soviet Union pavilion for a world exhibition, and in Our center time according to its model.

The idea of creating a sculpture

The idea of creation and compositional design of the monument belongs to the architect Boris Mikhailovich Iofan, he directly supervised the construction of the pavilion, in which the achievements of the Soviet people were shown at the Paris exhibition of the thirty-seventh year. In the closed competition (in the summer of 1936) four well-known sculptors participated: V.A. Andreev, I.D. Shadr, M.G. Manizer and V.I. Mukhina. After a couple of months, the projects were shown, and the state commission stopped its choice at the work of Vera Mukhina.

Making a sculptural ensemble

In just a few months the sculpture "Worker and Kolhoz Woman" was made using the latest technologies developed by Professor Petr Nikolaevich Lvov. On the huge frame were attached numerous details, from which formed a monumental sculpture. More than five thousand hanging elements were made of stainless steel chrome-plated steel, for the first time in the country spot welding was used. When dismantling and transporting the monument to Moscow, a significant part of the shell of the frame was damaged. During the assembly, the damaged elements were replaced, which resulted in deviations from the project. Initially, the sculptural composition Mukhina planned to install on the sluice tower, the Rybinsk hydroelectric power station under construction. And as a temporary solution it was mounted on a small nondescript pedestal to the opening in 1939 of VSHV (now VDNH), where it remained for the next 70 years before the construction of the Museum and Exhibition Center "Rabochy and Kolhoznitsa".

Revival of the monumental sculpture

The world masterpiece of modernism because of the venerable age required global restoration work. The decision to restore it was made in 1987, but because of the collapse of the USSR and a deep economic crisis, work began only in 2003 and stretched out for six years. A sculptural composition, disassembled into forty fragments, was subjected to a long time of testing, defect analysis and the study of corrosion wear. Several contract organizations and specialized institutes participated in the reconstruction work, under the guidance of the team of sculptors led by Vadim Tserkovnikov. Strengthening of the bearing structures of the composition, cleaning and treatment with anti-corrosion paste were handled by specialists of the Central Research Institute of Melikov named Melikov, this paste was specially developed in the All-Russian Research Institute of Aviation Materials (VIAM). Especially for the sculptural composition a pavilion-pedestal was built, copying the Parisian original.
