Meaning

The explanatory dictionary offers such meaning: "Unstable, being or acting for some time".

It seems that almost everyone understands the meaning of the adjective intuitively. People no longer dream of working in one place for 20 years or more. They live from project to project. The "project" is now almost everything. And for greater importance, men and women insert this word in any context.

Of course, we do not insist on such an interpretation, but the definition of "project" in its essence contains a hint of short duration. That is, no one in the head will not come in the modern world, that any project is education for 20 years, on the contrary, everyone is sure that this is a temporary job.

No one is now making plans for 30 years ahead, and not only because "a person is suddenly mortal," this is precisely what no one is particularly aware of, but because the world is extremely changeable, and dreaming about what will happen in the distant future, it's meaningless , We must solve today's problems. In other words, the meaning of the word "temporary" permeates a person's entire life, whether he realizes it or not.

Synonyms

After the definition of the word "temporary" is left behind, it's time to turn to synonyms. How can you replace an adjective when such a need arose? The words that can be substituted for the subject are:

  • Minute;
  • fleeting;
  • perishable;
  • Fragile;
  • unreliable;
  • Fleeting;
  • Unstable;
  • short;
  • transient.

As you can see, there is plenty to choose from. Naturally, each synonym has its own stylistic characteristics, for example, about temporary overlap, it is better to say "unreliable" or "fragile" than "fleeting". The last can be a holiday romance. In other words, you need to carefully choose substitutions, taking into account the requirements of context and stylistics. Russian (and any) language does not tolerate fuss.

On the insidiousness of constancy

To the meaning of the word "temporary" it is easy to pick up the antonyms - it is "permanent" or "eternal" (about it a little later). The most interesting thing is that such seemingly simple adjectives also have a moral connotation. The temporary is almost always bad, but the fact that it is permanent is good.

Examples are superfluous, because they are very familiar to everyone.

But let us take a look at the well-known pair of definitions from the other side. Change is the basis of life, if a person were told: "Hello, it's nice to meet you, this is your workplace for the next 20 years", then he would probably howl. In this form, a permanent job is like hell. The reader will say that this is unfair! Most people even now in one place try to stay as long as possible.

The reader is as always right, but the fact is that a person makes a choice every day, whether to work for him or not. He can quit his job at any moment, but he does not set it aside for external and internal reasons. But if a specialist were deprived of liberty, he would immediately escape from such working conditions.

When it comes to employment, and the person says: "These are not my permanent earnings, so, part-time work-outs," then not only the vital realities dictate to him how to be, but he himself is quite able to choose where to move next.

Adjective "eternal"

If we are already discussing the meaning of the word "temporary", then we can not say nothing about the "eternal" either.

With a permanent in the world there are interruptions. And it seems, it was always so. Seldom did anyone manage to do the same thing throughout their lives. Even writers, those whom we love so much, lives developed in different ways. Therefore, let us not harbor hopes, there is no eternal life in earthly life, but there is a word! Therefore, we will also need the help of an explanatory dictionary here, so that there will not be an error.

So, here they are - values:

  1. Existing in the centuries: permafrost, eternal ice .
  2. The same as the indefinite: the team was able to take the goblet to perpetual storage .
  3. What is constantly repeated, habitual, always: he always sings in the shower .

A person understands the "eternal" as a lifetime, if not invade the territory of religious debate. That is, if a man has put, for example, in the kitchen, a tap and a plumber tells him that the unit is eternal, it means: it will last for many years. The device can, of course, survive to grandchildren, but hardly.

Or, for example, a teenager listens to heavy rock, and parents think: "It will be forever!" But in the following year the boy switched to Bach already, which makes his relatives happy.

Is there a confrontation between the temporal and the eternal?

In language there is such an opposition as a synonym and an antonym. In life, as a rule, everything is more complicated, because it is difficult to vouch for tomorrow. Sometimes people do not work for years, then all this ends, and the eternal turns into temporary. But it happens the other way round: a person wants to wait out a storm in some quiet harbor, finds a temporary part-time job, and then it transforms into the whole life's business by vocation or in fact.

The advantage of employment for a short time is that it involves a constant search, development. Life thanks to the movement does not become a swamp, it does not stagnate.

In stability there are advantages: confidence in the future, calmness, certainty.

And in spite of the fact that in the language the words "temporary" and "permanent", "eternal" are divorced, the reader is free to choose in favor of one or the other.
