Symptoms of IBS (irritable bowel syndrome)

IBS, or irritable bowel syndrome, is a fairly common disease. Symptoms of IBS include acute pain in the stomach, diarrhea or constipation, as well as bloating. According to statistics, about 15 percent of all people suffer from this disease, and three women have one man. Disease is not included in the group of dangerous, but can significantly worsen the quality of life.

Possible reasons

Whatever the symptoms of IBS, they can be due to a number of reasons. Do not forget that doctors attribute this disorder to a number of functional ones: the most thorough research can not bring any results. Studies have shown that problems with the intestines are most often caused by factors such as stress, fatigue and hereditary predisposition. In addition, the state of our intestines largely depends on what foods predominate in our diet.

Stress

As noted above, IBS symptoms are characteristic of people in a state of severe stress. The increase in seizures is usually associated with unfavorable family conditions, loss of a loved one and chronic overwork.

Food

Those who suffer from undiagnosed abdominal pain, note their increase after eating the following foods: milk, cereals, eggs, nuts, fatty meat (especially pork). If you notice a connection between problems with digestion and some particular dish, you should exclude it from the diet or, at any rate, limit its use.

IBS: symptoms

At the beginning of the article, we have already mentioned that irritable bowel syndrome is characterized mainly by stomach pains. Let's talk about this in more detail. Most patients characterize the abdominal pain as "sharp", "cutting", "twisting". In addition, the pain sensations arise quite suddenly and are accompanied by a defecation disorder. In some people it manifests itself in the form of diarrhea, in others it is manifested as constipation. Symptoms of IBS can occur several times a day, but most often they make themselves felt a couple of times a month. It should be noted that they are very rarely considered the basis for a visit to a doctor: most people are confident that they are victims of food poisoning and are treated with appropriate methods. However, all these signs indicate the presence of IBS; Treatment in this case is necessary.

When should I go to the hospital?

Most likely, you need medical help if:

  • In your stool there are traces of blood;
  • At delivery of analyzes at you the low level of a hemoglobin was revealed;
  • Attacks of diarrhea occur more often at night;
  • You constantly have a fever;
  • Someone from your relatives has been diagnosed with Crohn's disease or intestinal cancer.

Diet

What can you personally do to ease your condition? First of all, pay attention to your diet. Think, do not you abuse fat, sharp, fried? If you are tormented by constipation, try to eat more fiber, instead of the usual white bread, eat bread with bran, drink as much water as possible (water, not tea and coffee). Do you suffer from frequent diarrhea? You will completely abandon cabbage and milk. Consumption of sour-milk products should be limited to a minimum.
