Roman F.M. Dostoevsky "The Possessed": a summary

In 1871-1872 the work of the famous Russian writer F.M. Dostoevsky's The Possessed. The summary of the novel is given in this article. On his writing the author came up with the case of the murder of student Ivanov, which caused a huge resonance in society. The novel is one of the most politicized works of the writer. He was filmed several times: in 1988, 1992 and 2006.

The dawning of conflict

The action of the work takes place in one of the provincial towns. The novel "The Possessed", the brief content of which you read, begins with a description of the idealist Stepan Trofimovich Verkhovensky and his platonic relations with a certain Varvara Petrovna Stavrogina. Around the main character of the novel, the liberal-minded youth is waving, admired by the "poses" and "phrases" of the idealist. At this time, the arrival of the demoted Guardsman Nikolai Stavrogin, who is for many a "mysterious" person, is expected. He is known for his binges and unbridled behavior. His mother Varvara Petrovna Stavrogina dreams of marrying him on Liza Tushina - daughter of her friend. And her wards Stepan Trofimovich she wants to see the husband of her pupil Daria Shatova. But it soon turns out that the son of Stavrogin, who unexpectedly arrived, is already married to the Chronophile - Marya Timofeevna Lebyadkina. When it became known, Shatov, Darya's brother, gives his son Stavrogin a slap in the face.

The "ferment" of views in the people

Soon Stavrogin appears Stepan Trofimovich's son Peter Verkhovensky and invites him to take part in a secret meeting of some kind of revolutionary society that dreams of the ideas of renunciation of God and anarchism. Nicholas appears at Shatov, a former revolutionary, disappointed in the ideas of this group, and warns him that they want to kill him. In the city, atheistic and anarchic moods are intensifying: people burn icons, mock the church rituals. Among this chaos is preparing a holiday, organized by the wife of the local governor Julia Mikhailovna. In an uneasy period in the history of Russia, Dostoyevsky wrote his novel The Possessed. His brief content is unlikely to convey the fullness of the ideological conflict that reigned at the time.

Shatova accused of treason

Revolutionary Pyotr Verkhovensky appears in the governor's house and reports that he is ready to uncover the state conspiracy. Head of the city Von Lembke, he says that Shatov is involved in the excesses that are going on in the streets. Having directed the vain on the disappointed in his revolutionary ideas, he goes to him and invites to the next meeting of "ours". Soon all the conspirators gather in the "secret veche", at which Peter accuses Shatov of treason. Its purpose is to lead the troubles on the streets of the town. To prevent changes in the ranks of his supporters, he decides to cement the secret society with blood, and Ivan Pavlovich should be the victim. With his crazy plans, Peter shares with Stavrogin. In the novel The Possessed, the summary of which is given here, Verkhovensky is an absolute evil.

Bloody denouement

Events quickly unfold. There comes a holiday, announced by Julia Mikhailovna. At this time it becomes known that the district of Zarechye is burning. This is clearly arson. And they also report that Captain Lebyadkin, his sister, Stavrogin's wife, and servants were killed. The governor hurries to the fire. There he is served by a log. Lisa, who spent the night with Stavrogin, learns from Verkhovensky that Nikolai knew about the planned murder of people and warned no one. She runs to the place of conflagration. Someone in the crowd recognizes it as "Stavroginskaya". She is beaten to death. Liza can not be saved. Meanwhile, the anarchist Verkhovensky continues to do his black work. He informs on Shatov and, using support in the governor's house, offers to remove him. Soon Ivan Pavlovich is attacked by five. Among them is Peter Verkhovensky. He kills him.

In the novel "The Possessed", a brief summary of which can be read within 20 minutes, more than 500 pages. But I believe that it will be very useful to disassemble the original work in detail. It does not lose relevance in our days. The work "Demons", a brief summary of which is given here, describes a difficult period in the history of our Motherland, when the people appeared terrorist and radical thoughts.
