On which side are the medals and medals?

Being present at various parades and celebrations of this or that event, very often you can meet people with awards on their chest. But how many people know on which side they wear medals and orders? How to properly place the insignia and what should be guided? This is what has become the topic of today's article.

Let's try to figure out which side of the chest is worn by medals, orders, various icons and medal straps? Is there any regularity in this, or does it all depend on the desires of the recipient?

How correctly to wear medals and orders

A medal is a sign of respect and recognition of a person's merits before the state or people. Of course, rewarding is a whole event in the life of a person, but here the festive euphoria is over, and the natural question arises: "On which side are the medals, can they be worn daily or should it be done only in special cases?" It turns out that there is a whole A set of rules, a kind of "medal" etiquette.

First of all, any rewards do not need to be worn daily - it's indecent. To wear insignia is only in special solemn occasions - for holidays, parades, solemn events on the occasion of an event.

And in order not to make a mistake, on which side of the jacket you wear medals, and where the orders, you need to follow such a rule: medals are hung on the left, and orders are fastened to the right. However, this is not always the case. For each specific order, a separate statute is worked out, and for a honorary title or medal - a special position. In these documents, the very definition of merit is prescribed (for which the award is given), and the procedure for awarding, wearing, and so on is defined. There are many nuances of wearing awards; Some are attached above or below in relation to the rest, others are located to the right or left of their "fellow". This set of rules is so great that it is not possible to list all the items within the framework of one article.

Wearing rules

Back in 1943, the Decree of the Presidium of the USSR Armed Forces indicated the sides of medals, orders and other insignia on which side.

According to this document, the orders having the form of a star are fastened on special pins on the right side of the tunic or jacket. Those that have the shape of a circle or an oval are left on special pentagonal pads, which are covered with a ribbon of the appropriate color. And each order or medal corresponds to a strictly defined ribbon, according to its color, it is possible to recognize which reward is given to a person, even if the latter is absent.

Orders and pads

On the chest, many veterans can see whole "iconostases" from such ribbons - they are called medal slats. How to properly arrange them? It is necessary to be guided by the basic rule: on which side the orders and medals are worn, in the same place are fastened the medal straps with ribbons of the corresponding color.

The same decree of 19.07.1943 established and the rules for wearing such tapes without the medals themselves and orders. To do this, special convex plates are used, which on the back have a special device, whereby they can be attached to clothing. Such designs (without medals) have been specially designed for everyday wearing. As already mentioned above, on which side the medals are worn, the same is attached to the bar (shoe). However, there are exceptions to this rule. There are such medals and orders that it is not permissible to wear separately from tapes, so there are no tabs for them.

Another nuance. For a separate wearing of a ribbon to the order "Victory" a special bar of rectangular shape 46 x 8 mm is offered. The rest can be of different sizes and combine in themselves from 2 to 5 tapes.

Jubilee medals

Now let's figure out which side is wearing the jubilee medals. They, as well as other insignia (not jubilee), are worn on the left half of the tunic or jacket. Each of them is accompanied by a separate provision, which specifies who can be awarded and how it should be worn.

In fact, there are a lot of jubilee medals , here are just a few of them:

  • "XX years of the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army";
  • "30 years of the Soviet Army and the Navy";
  • "40 years of the Armed Forces of the USSR";
  • "50 Years of the Armed Forces of the USSR";
  • "60 years of the Armed Forces of the USSR";
  • "70 years of the Armed Forces of the USSR".

All these medals are worn on the left side of the chest and are placed one after another in exactly the order indicated above.

After the award "For the Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945." Also follows a whole series of commemorative medals:

  • "Twenty Years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945";
  • "Thirty Years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945";
  • "Forty years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945."

Another very honorable and significant award - "For valiant work (for military valor)" - was established in honor of the centenary of the birth of the leader of the proletariat, VI Lenin. This award is so weighty that when it is worn with other orders or medals of the USSR, it is attached above and to the left of the overall medal of the order. Above it is only the "Gold Star" or "Hammer and Sickle," if any.

They are also located in this order.

Non-state awards

Those who carefully read the information outlined above should not have a question about which side is worn by non-state medals. Correctly. Just like all other breastplates of this kind, they are placed on the left. Such awards include, for example, jubilee medals of the Russian Federation. The fact is that the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of 07.09.2010 № 1099 such insignia are no longer state.

The non-state awards include the Zhukov medal, established by the centenary of the great commander. It is interesting that it exists in two forms: numbered and unlimited, with the first being awarded to state awards, and the second not. The civilian and military servicemen of the Navy, the Red Army, NKVD troops, members of the underground and partisans were rewarded with an unlimited medal for personal courage, courage and fortitude displayed in the fight against the fascists and Japanese militarists. Together with the medal, all the awarded were given a certificate to her.

Veteran of Labour

If military people usually know how and how to properly carry rewards, then civilians often have difficulties with this. For example, on which side the "Veteran of Labor" medal is worn, not everyone is awarded it. Having carefully read our article, this question can be answered without much difficulty. Since this is a medal, it should be worn on the left. If a person already has a reward "For Valiant Labor in the Second World War 1941-1945", then "Veteran of Labor" is located after it. Applications for awarding this award may be party or trade union organizations at enterprises, the administration of the institution in which the person works.

Where medals can not be worn

So, with the question of on which side the medals are worn, they sorted it out. But people who have them, just need to know where the insignia are not worn.

  1. According to the Rules of wearing medals, medals, military insignia and medal ribbons (Order of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs No. 240 dated June 21, 1943), if a person wears a military uniform, the insignia must be present on it.
  2. All rewards are worn only on uniforms, tunics or tunics. On the overcoat, rewards are only attached to the parades, and even then in each individual case an order of command is required for this.
  3. To wear any orders, medals and military insignia on the top overalls, overalls, coats and various quilted jackets is prohibited.
  4. If a person is awarded the Gold Star medal and the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, or the Sickle and the Hammer Medal and is recognized as the Hero of Socialist Labor, then he must wear these insignia constantly - both in front of him, or with a daily or field dress. It is also obligatory to wear the signs of the number of wounds, the marksmen of the arms of the armed forces, the sign "Guards" and others.

As you can see, there are a lot of subtleties and nuances in this matter, so before you put on this or that award, it's worthwhile to ask yourself how to wear it properly.
