Kampsis: planting and care, difficulties and peculiarities of cultivation

Kampsis, planting and care for which will be considered in this article - a high flowering liana, reaching sometimes ten meters in height. The plant belongs to the family Begoniaceae, whose representatives grow mainly in the tropics. Let's get acquainted with a creeper such as kampsis, planting and caring for which are of interest to those who want their site to be adorned with a luxurious climbing plant. It was brought to Europe from North America in the seventeenth century and has now gained wide popularity.

Kampsis: planting and care. Basics

This plant climbs on vertical surfaces with the aid of climbing shoots and air roots. Young stems are green, with age they become light brown in the process of lignification, and they also become covered with scaly bark. The plant kamppsis awakens in the spring late enough, because of this, its shoots are largely protected from damage by frost. It begins to grow intensively only at the end of May. By the beginning of June, a lush green foliage has formed. The leaves are large (up to forty centimeters in length).

The main ornament that makes gardeners appreciate kampsis (which sometimes is associated with some difficulties) is its beautiful tubular flowers. They are red, yellow and orange, expand to the top, have the form of a cone from six to ten centimeters long and up to five centimeters in diameter. You can admire them from the middle of summer to September. Flowers are collected in the corymbose inflorescences. The fruits of the campsis are similar to small hanging handbags. When they ripen, they crack, and the seeds fall out of them. If you remove the ovary, then the plant will have a longer appearance and its bloom will continue until October. Most varieties of kampsis are undemanding to soils, but they need good illumination. This plant is resistant to pests. Most often, the walls of the camps are covered with shoots, they are lined with fences, arbours, supports. Liana can twist tree trunks on the condition that they do not give an abundant shadow. A small gazebo with a roof, which accumulates a large amount of solar heat, thanks to the excess of the sun, can be beautifully decorated in the garden; the campsis blooms and turns the whole structure into a bright color spot. This liana is actively used in urban gardening. It is well suited for warm areas. After planting immediately need to provide support, a little mulching at the base (and more tightly - before the beginning of winter). After a while all the shoots must be cut off, leaving no more than fifteen centimeters. This will promote tillering. New shoots need to be manually distributed neatly along the support - then they will cover the maximum surface.

Kampsis: planting and care, difficulties and problems

Do not advise planting the plant at the windows - the flowers attract a huge number of insects (especially unpleasant wasps and hornets), which can fly into the premises and cause a lot of inconvenience. The air roots of the campsis, by which it clings to the wall, can penetrate between the bricks and damage the integrity of the masonry. Therefore, if you need to remove some of the vine from your house, be prepared for the fact that part of the frozen solution will be removed along with the tenacious roots. The wall after this will need reconstruction. The root growth of the campsis can also cause some inconvenience to the beginning gardener. Lines appear in a very large amount, and in order for your site not to become overgrown, you will need to regularly remove them.
