How to cut onions and not cry - simple tips

Chew gum or light a candle? It's time to figure out which of these myths about how to cut a bow and not cry at the same time is the truth, and which is fiction.

We all know this condition. You chop the crunchy onion, and suddenly the tears begin to flow from the eyes. As if you just watched the last scene from the Titanic and burst into tears. Why does the bow make us cry? When we begin to cut the vegetable, the substances contained in its different cells and having a different composition combine. The result is a so-called onion gas containing sulfur. When it evaporates, it settles on the eyes, or rather - on the mucous membranes, which causes tears. Onions make even the most famous chefs cry. So, maybe this is a perfectly normal question: how do you cut an onion and do not cry? There are many different ways and advice, ranging from chewing gum or sweets to using in the candle process. You can try all these techniques for the sake of interest. We will help you dispel all the myths and ultimately we will stop on the best method that will help to cut the onions and not cry at the same time.

Method 1: Freezer

We put onions in the freezer for 15-20 minutes before they began to cut it, and what's more important, they used a very sharp knife. Does it really work? Unfortunately no. It was superfluous to ice onions, since the frozen vegetable was a little more difficult to cut, and this did not save us from tears. In addition to the fact that our fingers are very frozen, this method did not help much to stop the flow of tears. We recommend storing onions at room temperature so that it can be easily ground. However, this method is good to use only when you want to freeze onions for long-term storage.

Method 2: chewing gum

We chewed the chewing gum and breathed through the mouth, instead of breathing, as usual, through the nose. It sounds silly, but we did it! Does it really work? Unfortunately no. Of course, it was nice to chew tasty cud, but it did not have any effect. It's a pity!

Method 3: drink water

Drink a glass of water a few minutes before chopping the onions. Dry eyes "grab" for any liquid that is in the air. Does it really work? No. Note: drinking water did not matter, but it helped our body to adapt to our warm kitchen!

Method 4: Wooden spoon

If a wooden spoon is held with teeth, it will help absorb the onion odor. Does it really work? Not for us! Unfortunately, the tears continued to flow by the stream. But, on the other hand, it gave our culinary spoons an unusual print of our teeth.

Method 5: Will the candle help?

Light a candle near the cutting board. Does it really work? No! Our notes: it looked good and beautiful, but, unfortunately, there is absolutely no sense from this lit candle. It just made us laugh a little. The candle gave us a bit of a romantic atmosphere, but it did not stop our tears. According to those to whom this method is suitable, - the more the flame, the less tears. But we came to the conclusion that this game is not worth the candle!

Method 6: trying to put on glasses

We put on ordinary glasses (the most usual for swimming under water, which you can buy in the store) instead of glasses specially for this case, which are so advertised on TV. Glasses protect your eyes, and you look pretty cool. Does it really work? Yes! It is worth noting that the lenses blocked access to the onion gas to the eyes, which, in turn, stopped the tears. Finally, we found a hint that really works! Despite the fact that our team looked like a bunch of mad scientists, this method definitely made everyone who watched it cry, but with laughter.

Having tried each of these methods, we came to this conclusion: the best way is to use a sharp knife. If you cut a bow with a sharp knife, you can damage fewer vegetable cells, because they contain different connections. For example, the sulfur compound reacts with moisture in the eyes and thereby causes irritation. The second best way is to work in a well-ventilated room. Open the window or turn on the exhaust fan above your plate. And, of course, you can always keep a pair of safety goggles for swimming next to your cutting board.
