Flood in the US, the most destructive

The US territory is often subjected to catastrophic effects of various natural disasters. This is a strong earthquake, and volcanic eruptions, and terrible hurricanes, and much more from natural elements. Also in the US, there are floods. And although they happen rarely, but the troubles bring a lot, because they are often catastrophic.

Destructive floods in the USA

The main causes of flooding are floods of rivers in low-lying areas of the relief caused by a significant excess of precipitation rates, as well as powerful hurricanes raging on the ocean coast of the country. As a result of torrential thunderstorms, floods often occur in mountainous areas of the USA, when narrow canyons are instantly filled with rainwater.

Mississippi Spills

In the history of the country, the Mississippi River left its banks twice, causing catastrophic floods. Flooding in the United States in 1927 was called the Great, and it fully earned it both with its grandeur, and with the monstrous devastating consequences to which it resulted.

The beginning of the flood was caused by prolonged torrential rains in the autumn of 1926. Numerous tributaries of the Mississippi were overflowing with water and were ready at any moment to leave the coast. In the spring, torrential rains resumed, and this was enough that on April 15, 1927, the river broke through the system of protective dams and rushed to the vast expanses of the Mississippian lowland. The flooded area was an area of 70,000 km 2 . Ten states of the country suffered from the disaster, especially Arkansas, in which 14% of the territory went under water. During the disaster, 246 people were killed, more than 700,000 residents of the country lost their homes.

In 1993, the flood in the US on the Mississippi repeated. Its cause was again rainy autumn and snowy winter of 1992. In the spring the river left the banks and flooded more than 80 thousand square kilometers. The disaster lasted more than seven months: until October 1993. Tens of thousands of houses were destroyed, 32 people were killed, the damage caused by the elements was estimated at tens of billions of dollars.

Revenge of the Hurricanes

Almost every year the US coast along the Atlantic Ocean is subjected to powerful hurricanes. The strongest of them also cause flooding in the US, especially in the territories of the states of Florida, Louisiana, Texas and North Carolina. The most terrible and destructive were the hurricanes: Galveston in 1900, Andrew in 1992, Katrina in 2005.

But, perhaps, the most powerful was the 2012 flood in the United States caused by the hurricane Sendi. It was observed on most of the eastern coast of the country. The tropical cyclone, formed over the Atlantic, swept along the coast of Florida and the north-eastern states of the country. The most affected by the hurricane were the states of New Jersey, New York and Connecticut.

The aftermath of Hurricane Sandy was terrible. Millions of people remained without electricity for a long time, a large number of buildings were destroyed, the work of transport was paralyzed. He killed more than a hundred people, including young children. People suffered not only from flooding, but also from numerous fires that arose in some cities. The state suffered damage in billions of dollars.
