Flag and coat of arms of Novorossiysk: description, history and interesting facts

The flag and coat of arms of Novorossiysk are the official symbols of this city. Each of them has its own meaning and history.

From the history

Until November 1909 near the port city of Novorossiysk, its coat of arms was not. After consideration by the Governing Senate of the issue of preparing a draft coat of arms for this city, on September 15, 1914 he received the Highest Approval.

Revolutionary events pushed the problems of the city coat of arms into the background. Only in the sixties the interest in the heraldic subject was again awakened.

In Novorossiysk City Council of Deputies in 1968 a new coat of arms of the city of Novorossiysk was approved.

Outwardly, he was a shield, the diagonal of which was an order ribbon similar to that found on the Order of the Patriotic War of the first degree. The gray or silver half of the shield contained an image of smoking pipes, which were located on the half of the gear.

The blue, or azure, half included an anchor made of gold. The ribbon was decorated with a red carnation - a symbol of revolutionary traditions.

September 14, 1973, Novorossiysk was awarded the honorary title of the Hero City. After this event the coat of arms of Novorossiysk was supplemented with the medal "Gold Star", as well as with a ribbon that adorns the Order of Lenin. This version of the arms of Novorossiysk lasted a little over twenty years.

In early 1995, at a meeting, the City Duma approved a new version of the coat of arms. For its basis, the composition used in the pre-revolutionary city coat of arms was used, which was supplemented by certain important events that took place in the city during the Soviet period.

However, this option was rejected by the presidential Heraldic Council.

How the modern coat of arms of Novorossiysk was created

07.07.2005 The Novorossiysk City Duma adopted a decision on the expediency of returning to the city coat of arms the historical sight that was approved by Emperor Nikolay II at the beginning of the twentieth century.

The presidential Heraldic Council, this option was, in principle, supported, but it was suggested to make some changes. The status crown should become more of a proper kind, and the coat of arms should be without framing elements.

On 21.02.2006 a new, modern coat of arms of Novorossiysk was adopted, the description of which was approved at the meeting of the City Duma. The new edition took into account all the expert recommendations. Soon the State Heraldic Register was replenished with the new coat of arms of the hero city of Novorossiysk.

Description of the coat of arms

The coat of arms of Novorossiysk speaks of the high status of one of the Russian hero cities, which is the Black Sea outpost and the southern sea gate.

The emblem depicts a golden shield with a black wavy tip. On it is an image of a black two-headed eagle on which the Imperial Crown is on top. In one of his paws a scepter, in the other - a power.

The eagle's eagles are equipped with a shield with a golden orthodox eight-pointed cross inscribed in a scarlet field, which is planted on a silver overturned crescent moon.

Above the shield is a golden five-edged tower crown. In an earlier version of the coat of arms, there were also two golden anchors that connect the Alexandrovsky ribbon.

The image of the imperial eagle refers to the so-called Nicholas type, which is quite rare in our heraldry. Thus, it is emphasized that the foundation of the city dates back to the time of the reign of Nicholas I.

The presence of an Orthodox eight-pointed cross, mounted on an overturned silver crescent moon and placed in a scarlet field on the shield, recalls that Russian weapons won a historic victory over the Turks on the North Caucasus Black Sea coast.

A special kind of golden five-toothed crown calls to recall the glorious traditions and heroic history of Novorossiysk.

The golden color on the coat of arms speaks of power, grandeur, generosity and glory. Black shade speaks of wisdom, modesty, honesty, eternity of being.

Under red (scarlet) means the presence of courage, courage, celebration and beauty.

Silver is usually symbolized by perfection, nobility, purity, faith and peace.

History of the flag of the city

On the first version of the city-hero flag, approved at the session of the city Duma on 10.09.1999, blue waves were depicted in the lower part of the white cloth. Near the shaft was depicted the city coat of arms of Novorossiysk.

This presidential version of the flag was not approved by the presidential Heraldic Council.
The refusal to state registration was justified by the fact that the composition of the flag included colors and figures missing in the city coat of arms.

The Heraldic Commission of the city mayor soon developed a new draft of the flag, which would fully take into account all the requirements of domestic heraldry and flagship.

On July 22, 2007, a meeting was held in the Novorossiysk City Duma, at which an updated version of the city flag was presented, provided by the mayor, which has not lost its relevance to the present.

Description of the flag

The modern flag of the city-hero of Novorossiysk consists of a double-sided rectangular panel attached to the shaft, the width of which is two-thirds the length.

The color of the panel is yellow. Parallel to the lower edge is a wavy black strip, on which there are eight ridges. Its width is a fifth of the width of the panel.

Near the pole in the upper part of the flag on both sides there is a figure of an eagle, depicted on the coat of arms of Novorossiysk.

In terms of size, the emblem has a width equal to one-third of the length of the flag.

About the hymn of the city

1999 brought Novorossiysk its anthem. For this purpose, the music of Dmitry Shostakovich, one of the great composers of the twentieth century, was used.

In 1960, the composer presented the city with a hand-written version of the Novorossiysk chime, a work written in honor of Novorossiysk.

This music is constantly heard from the most sacred for all citizens of the heroic place - the Heroes' Square.
