Co-trimoxazole - recommendations for use

Co-trimoxazole is an antimicrobial agent that is available as a solution for infusions, injections, tablets, oral suspension. The main active substances in this preparation are sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, and the auxiliary ones are low molecular weight polyvinylpyrrolidone, calcium stearate and potato starch.

Indications for use

Co-trimoxazole is used in the presence of such infectious diseases:

- pneumonia, empyema of the pleura, acute and chronic bronchitis, lung abscess, bronchoectatic disease ;

- epididymitis, prostatitis, urethritis;

- mild chancroid, gonorrhea, inguinal granuloma, venereal lymphogranuloma;

- typhoid fever, bacterial diarrhea, paratyphoid, shigellosis, cholangitis, gastroenteritis, cholera, only as part of a combination treatment;

- wound infections, acne, pyoderma, furunculosis, soft tissue abscesses, erysipelas;

- sinusitis, otitis media, laryngitis;

- Brain abscess, septicemia, acute and chronic osteomyelitis, meningitis, acute brucellosis, malaria, toxoplasmosis, South American blastomycosis, in the treatment of whooping cough is used only as part of a comprehensive treatment.

Co-trimoxazole - instructions for use

This drug should be taken twice a day at a frequency of 12 hours. For children aged 3 to 5 years, the single dose is 240 mg, at the age of 6-12 years - 480 mg, and after 12 - 960 mg.

Usually, the therapy for acute infections is at least 5 days, but after the disappearance of visible symptoms of the disease should take the pill two more days. Treatment of such diseases as inguinal lymphogranulomatosis, chronic bronchitis, acute otitis media, mild chancre can last up to two weeks, and acute brucellosis up to a month and typhoid or paratyphoid up to 3 months.

In the treatment of uncomplicated gonorrhea with the use of the drug "Co-trimoxazole" the instruction indicates that its dose should be 480 mg twice a day, but you can take 2400 mg, after 8 hours you must again take the same amount, and possibly one-time Application of the drug in an amount of 3840 mg.

For the treatment of gonococcal infection, Co-trimoxazole is taken three times a day for 960 mg per week.

Treatment of malaria is carried out for 2 days, the drug is taken twice a day for 1920 mg.

Side effect

After receiving the "Co-trimoxazole", such undesirable phenomena as pancreatitis, dyspepsia, anorexia, pseudomembranous enterocolitis, nausea, stomatitis can appear. Also, aplastic anemia, methemoglobinemia, agranulocytosis, eosinophilia, hypoprothrombinemia, crystalluria, interstitial nephritis and renal insufficiency may occur.

Taking this medication can cause aseptic meningitis, headache, arthralgia, hyperkalemia, rash, itching, fever.

If side effects occur, then stop taking the medication. If there is a need for its long-term use, then the composition of peripheral blood and the work of the kidneys and liver should be monitored. To prevent the appearance of crystalluria, it is advisable to drink at least 3 liters of liquid throughout the day.

Contraindications

It is strictly forbidden to use this medication in the presence of agranulocytosis, deficiency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, hypersensitivity to its components, B12-deficiency anemia, hepatic or renal insufficiency, hyperbilirubinemia in children, leukopenia, orally for children up to 2 months and parenterally to children under 6 years.

Overdose with the drug "Co-trimoxazole"

In case of an overdose, this means may cause crystalluria, headache, anorexia, weakness, nausea, abdominal pain, hematuria and drowsiness. In such cases, it is necessary to perform gastric lavage, inject fluid to correct electrolyte disturbances, possibly hemodialysis.
