Already after the death of the scientist, the world saw his work "Dictionary for the plays of AN Ostrovsky."

Dictionary

The most monumental work of the scientist was "Explanatory dictionary of the Russian language". It was created on the basis of the work of Dmitry Nikolayevich Ushakov, together with G. Vinokur and V. Petrosyan. Also in the creation of the original edition Academician SP Obnarsky as editor-in-chief was involved.

During the lifetime of the linguist, six editions were published. The first - in 1949, the volume of 948 pages.

The circulation of the second edition in 1952 was already 150,000. The third, in 1953, was already 400,000.

With the release of the dictionary, the name of Sergei Ivanovich Ozhegov was put on a par with the names of Dmitry Ushakov and Dalya Vladimir Ivanovich.

Further destiny of the dictionary

The work of Sergei Ivayo was continued by Natalia Shvedova, lexicographer, linguist, doctor of philology.

Up to 1992, there were publications with additions and corrections. In the twenty-first version, the number of words used grew from 57,000 to seventy.

The edition in the last edition was published in 1997.

The dictionary has become a reference book for several generations. Words and phraseology formed the basis of translations from foreign languages, translators' dictionaries.
