Bibliographic Description

A bibliographic description is information containing bibliographic information about a document, part of a document or a collection of several documents compiled according to established rules or standards. With the help of such a description, it is possible to identify the document, since this is a kind of its characteristic, indicating its main features.

Bibliography

The bibliography is a field of information activities, which deals with the systematization, preparation for use and dissemination of bibliographic information. In Greek, this complex word means "writing a book."

The main task of the bibliography is the organization of bibliographic activities in accordance with established standards. Thus, when composing a bibliographic description of a document, one must adhere to the standard established in accordance with GOST 7.1-2003.

Another area of activity of the bibliography is the compilation of various classifications of documents, their lists, as well as collections of citations and bibliographic indexes.

Components of the bibliographic description

The bibliographic description is an integral part of the bibliographic record. Such a description is made up of a header and areas separated from each other by various mathematical and punctuation marks. For example, a colon or dash. Areas are divided into elements.

Description at the beginning contains the title of the author of the document in the title, as well as the title proper, which is written without abbreviations. Further, the document type is specified. For example, we specify by placing a colon in front of you, that this document is a textbook. Then the data of the regions is entered. The areas contained in the bibliographic description may be different depending on the type of description. For example, the area may contain data on the release of the document, in the next area the number of pages is specified. In parentheses and without abbreviations, the series is indicated, followed by the circulation and the international ISBN number. The elements that make up the regions are written with a small letter.

Types of bibliographic descriptions

According to GOST of 2003, the bibliographic description can be of the following types: one-level, multi-level, analytical. A special type of such a description are bibliographic references. If the description is very detailed and consists of all possible elements, then it is called complete. An extended description of the bibliography can also include not only mandatory, but also optional elements. In addition, you can compile and a short description, consisting only of elements that are mandatory. These elements include the title and primary information on liability.

Bibliographic description of a brochure or book

The modern standard defines the bibliographic description of the book as a structure consisting of mandatory and optional elements that are combined in the field. Areas are separated with the help of conditional, determined by Gosstandart, punctuation and mathematical symbols. The main title of the book should be listed in the same way as on the title page, without distorting its shape and abbreviations.

Mandatory elements in the book bibliographic description are: title, title of the book, place of publication. Other elements of the title should explain and reveal the title and clarify the type of book, genre, purpose and other characteristics. Next comes the separation of the area with a slash. The information on liability includes information about publishers and persons who prepared the book for publication. This information contains the names of editors, compilers, translators and others.
