ZIL 133 - the legend of the USSR

With the development of the Soviet Union, freight transport gradually developed, as it was an integral part of the transportation system for various goods (durable goods, foodstuffs, and so on). Before the engineers of the ZIL plant in Moscow, the task was set: to create a new heavy-duty vehicle capable of lifting and transporting goods with a mass of 8 tons, and at the same time it was necessary to take into account the uniform axial load on the road.

Thus, the legendary three-axle vehicle ZIL-133 appeared. It was produced in two types: the ZIL VY truck-mounted tractor and the ZIL GY truck. First of all, they were designed for operation on motorways, allowing an axial load of 10 tons. Also, these trucks easily crossed dirt roads. For their original appearance among the people, they received the nickname "crocodile".

New triaxial models of trucks were created on the basis of ZIL 133 G1, which was produced since the mid 70-ies of the last century. Despite this, the cars of the "GY" series far exceeded the ZIL G1 by technical characteristics.

The cars were supplied with a diesel engine KAMAZ 740 with a capacity of 210 horsepower. This engine was specially developed for the truck ZIL 133 GY.

In Soviet times, these wagons were real kings of roads along with 500 MAZs and powerful KAMAZ trucks. Now these ZILs are rare, but with their appearance there is a real sensation among passers-by, because not every day you meet such a miracle of technology.

The truck is equipped with a metal cabin with three seats. From the conveyor, refrigerators, side-by-side, and also isothermal vans came down one by one . And all of them were intended for inter-regional and international cargo transportation.

A few words about tilt vans

This modification of ZIL GY was the most popular and the most popular in those days (however, as now). The cargo platform was a metal base, wooden boards, as well as a removable frame and awning. In order to transport goods weighing 8 tons, it was not necessary to call a tractor - it was enough to attach a GKB semi-trailer to the van. According to its technical data, this train completely replaced the tractor.

Of course, the road train described above was not suitable for transportation of oversized cargo (for example, 12 meter rails and pipes). With this task the tractor ZIL VYA perfectly handled. It could be completed with various trailers: Odaz, Maz, Nefaz, etc. Thanks to this, the tractor has become more versatile. For transportation, for example, metal rolling it was enough to attach an onboard platform, and for transportation of food the trailer-refrigerator was approaching. And in order to promptly deliver cargo on rough terrain and just a wet road, the developers have provided the function of locking the differential, which is controlled by a special pneumatic chamber.

It is worth saying that both cars are designed for operation at extreme temperatures: from +40 to -40 degrees Celsius.
