The first generation was built on the famous platform Nissan FF-S. It is noteworthy that Primera and Almera models received the same platform earlier. And the design of the X-Trail was borrowed from the "older brother" Patrol.

In 2007, a new second generation Nissan Secondstream was presented. The main differences from the predecessor were a new design, a new platform (Nissan C) and the choice between the front and all-wheel drive.
