Windows 10 crashes "Standard application dropped": how to fix the situation?

Although it is believed that the tenth version of Windows is the most "advanced" among all the operating systems from Microsoft, it crashes with the message "Standard application is reset" (Windows 10). How to fix this situation, now and see. But first, let's find out the reasons for this incomprehensible behavior of the system.

What does the message Windows 10 "Standard application reset" mean?

Standard applications refer to programs that are installed by the system or user to perform any frequent actions without prompting you to select the appropriate application (opening files of a certain type, surfing the Internet, playing music and video, mail clients, etc.).

Thus, if a user receives a warning that a standard application has been reset by Windows 10, this only indicates that the system has installed a list of standard programs to the default option, which is provided initially.

Main types of problems

As one of the main reasons for resetting associations, many experts call the constant installation of service packs after integrating into the system not perceiving some outdated or unofficial versions of programs that the user would like to use. And it's the updates that register their own values in the system registry, changing the user settings. Therefore, the most effective way to fix a malfunction with the message Windows 10 "Standard application is reset" is editing the registry.

As for the reset itself, in most cases it is observed for image files, music, video, and also for user-used web browsers. In addition, when installing new software, the system uses the hash data reconciliation mechanism and, if it detects a mismatch, the reset occurs (Windows identifies the installed applications as potentially dangerous).

"Standard application is reset" Windows 10. What should I do first?

If this is the case, first of all you should pay attention to the update packages. Typically, this failure causes an update with the number KB3135173.

It follows that this update should be removed and not installed in the future. To do this, enter the installed updates section in the Update Center and uninstall the specified package. Then you can manually search for the currently available updates, and from the list this update is simply excluded.

This is not the only example, other updates can also have such an impact on associations. In this case, after the problem occurs, you need to delete the updates one at a time and change the standard programs. When negative impact packages are found, the above described technique applies to them.

Alternatively, you can disable the system update at all. But this does not guarantee the operability of some programs in the future. In extreme cases, you can roll back the system to the previous state, but this will only help for a while if the automatic update is active.

The ban on resetting standard applications in the system registry

Now go to the most effective method of fixing the crash and clarify the question of how to prevent Windows 10 from dropping programs.

We call the Registry Editor from the "Run" console (Win + R) on behalf of the administrator, registering the regedit command in it. Next, go to the HKLM branch and through the SOFTWARE, Classes, Local Settings sections and down the folder tree, go down to the Packages directory. For example, for photos, you should use the appropriate directory (Microsoft.Windows.Photos_ "package version"), which contains the sections App and Capabilities. The last directory contains the FileAssociations folder. We need it.

In the right part of the editor window we look for extensions of files that are being reset (for example, .jpg) and copy the values of the parameter. Next, go to the HTCU branch, and then through the SOFTWARE section we get to the Classes directory, where we find the above long key. Now, right-click in the right part of the window to create a new string parameter named NoOpenWith and an empty value. We save the specified value and perform similar actions for all file types, which for some reason are reset.

What to do next?

Now you can go to the section of standard programs and install your own applications, which will be used by default. After all the changes that have been made, the Windows 10 "Standard application reset" message will no longer appear.

Naturally, such editing will require a lot of time, but unfortunately there is no other way. If you really want to change everything dramatically, you can try to install the latest maximally modified version of the "dozens", but this is not a complete guarantee of the absence of such a malfunction. What is most sad, this applies to all currently known modifications of the system (Pro, Education, etc.). Even the most recent modifications with pre-installed updates can have such problems, not to mention the fact that the update of Annivesary Update is completely incorrect, isolating entire software packages installed in the system. And it's just not worth installing!

Conclusion

As can be seen from all of the above, the situation with the warning Windows 10 "Standard application is dropped" is quite ticklish. Method of elimination - the problem is also not easy. And to date there have not been any automated utilities to eliminate such a malfunction. Do not even help programs that disconnect unnecessary components of the system. So you have to spend time to eliminate the consequences of the dump.
