What is System Volume Information? Basic concepts

Many users often see incomprehensible files and folders on the computer and wonder what it is? System Volume Information (system folder) is not an exception. For what it is intended, too, not everyone knows. Let's try to figure out what's what.

What is this: System Volume Information?

To begin with, every user has encountered or at least heard of a concept such as "system recovery". And many do not need to explain what it is. System Volume Information is just a folder that contains all the data to roll back the system to the desired checkpoint.

Naturally, its size can be quite large due to the periodicity of creating intermediate recovery points. That's why some "advanced" users, completely unaware that this, System Volume Information is simply barbarously trying to remove due to the weighty size of the folder.

Doing this categorically does not follow. In addition, you need to understand that there are several such folders on the entire hard drive. It all depends on the number of logical partitions on which the hard disk is partitioned. For each volume, you create your own folder containing comprehensive information on restoring the system and data stored on the disks.

Somewhat later we will consider, so to speak, more civilized methods that allow a painless cleaning of such directories without any damage to the system as a whole.

Where and how to find the System Volume Information directory?

As expected, this object is hidden from the eyes of a normal user folder. This is natural, as, as we have already noted, it is not worthwhile to climb into it. No, of course, the user can delete the System Volume Information folder, but we already know that nothing good will come of it.

So, first you need to enable the display of hidden objects. This is done in the "Tools" menu, where the "View" tab is selected in the folder options. In the settings window, you must enable the display option for such folders and files, and then save the changes.

Now, if you go to the root directory of any disk or logical partition, until now the hidden information directory can be seen.

System Volume Information: How to clear a folder?

Now let's see what the cleaning of the contents of the folder is. Let's look at the System Volume Information directory. How to delete a folder, or rather, its contents? There is nothing easier.

You can use standard Windows tools to do this. Here you need to go into the system properties, called through the desktop icon on the desktop with the right click, and use the system protection menu. The main settings window will list all the disks and logical partitions on the system. Select the disk for which you want to delete the information, then use the setup button.

In the opened window, we are not interested in the set parameters. Everything is much simpler here. You just need to click the "Delete" button and confirm the selection after the system request.

Incidentally, it should be noted that with the slightly higher slider, you can change the amount of reserved disk space to save copies (images) of the state of disks and partitions installed by default.

However, it should be noted immediately that after deleting all the information, some data after critical Windows crashes can not be restored. So before cleaning, you should think about the appropriateness of the actions.

What should I do if I can not access the folder?

In some cases, when trying to access this system directory, there may be a situation where the system issues a prohibition message. Most often, this applies to user accounts that do not have administrator rights to the computer or network. But you can bypass these restrictions.

Here we need to select the property section after the right click on the folder icon and click the "Edit" button on the security tab. In the new group permissions window, add a new user with the appropriate button and select an account from the list that appears. For complete certainty, "accounting" can be checked immediately.

Now it's a little thing. You just need to check the boxes on the fields present, first of all in front of the full access option, and apply the changes. However, for the permissions system, you can also use the same Group Policy Editor, but this method is clearly easier in this case.

Conclusion

So, we examined one of the most important objects of Windows operating systems and figured out what it is. System Volume Information (in this case we will describe this term as "system information"), as already understood, is responsible for the parameters of data recovery, so that deleting the contents of the folder is recommended only in extreme or emergency cases.

In this case, it is necessary to use only the method of cleaning the contents and use of Windows tools and in no case to try to remove it manually, because, the hour is not exactly the whole system will "fly out". And to be engaged in its restoration after that can turn out to be a rather painstaking work. So it turns out that even before safe cleaning one should think a hundred times about the possible consequences.
