Why enteritis in dogs, and how to treat them?

Enteritis in dogs today are considered the most common diseases that affect the animal's body regardless of its age, size, breed and health characteristics. The disease is characterized by inflammation of the small intestine, which is accompanied by deterioration of health and the appearance of unpleasant symptoms. Dog enteritis can provoke various pathogens, including parasites, viruses and bacteria, among which rotavirus and parvovirus are often found. In addition to bacterial and infectious nature, enteritis in dogs can develop as a result of severe stress, consumption of poor-quality food or feed, overeating, contaminated water entering the stomach from natural reservoirs or changing diet. Despite the etiology of the disease, its symptoms are always the same.

Symptoms of enteritis

First of all, the animal has diarrhea with a fetid stool, which in color and consistency resembles pea soup, vomiting, fever, cramps in the peritoneum, general weakness, lethargy, poor appetite and water rejection. In more severe cases, such diseases in dogs can be accompanied by bloody stools. Regardless of the underlying cause, enteritis often provokes severe dehydration, which means that many sick animals need to inject intravenously saline with glucose to improve their well-being. To conduct such manipulations, the pet should be temporarily hospitalized and conduct appropriate tests that will help establish the correct diagnosis. In more light cases, you can take care of the dog at home, and the veterinarian will explain how to do it correctly. If enteritis in dogs is associated with the penetration of more serious infections, the animals stay in the vet clinic for several weeks.

Treatment of enteritis

Treatment of enteritis in dogs begins with keeping the animal on a starvation diet. First of all, it is necessary to release the digestive canal with castor oil, which has a laxative effect. After that, disinfectants and astringents are prescribed. When chronic form of the disease is recommended to give the dog 1 tablet of fistal during feeding, and when involved in the process of the colon, useful will be warm enema from chamomile broth or a weak solution of potassium permanganate. With a strong weakness, the animal is recommended to give special vitamins and glucose, and restrict the diet to medicinal broths, egg whites and yogurt.

Prevention of disease

Protect the animal from infection by using timely vaccination, as well as continuous monitoring of the quality of nutrition and drinking of a pet. Enteritis in dogs is much less common, if regular prophylaxis against parasites is carried out, as well as undergoing a routine examination with a veterinarian. It should be remembered that such a serious illness can result in death, especially for puppies and elderly dogs, so it's best to carefully monitor the status of your four-friend friend in order to be able to help him in time.
