Terms of harvesting cabbage

When to clean cabbage? In Siberia, for the long winter, the safety of the heads is directly dependent on how correctly and on time the cleaning was carried out. The cabbage intended for souring and salting is removed in the middle of October, and for winter storage a little later - from the beginning to the middle of November. The belated periods of cabbage harvesting in Siberia, where serious frosts occur, can often lead to freezing of the head, which affects the preservation of the crop. In addition, uncleaned on time, the heads are cracked, burst, which also does not contribute to their long-term storage.

It is important that cabbage has reached the size and shape that this variety provides. Late grades are removed only after the second phase of the head is completed. The denser the head is formed, the longer it will be able to survive in winter.

How to properly harvest cabbage

Harvesting cabbage is recommended to be carried out in a dry period. If cabbage harvesting occurred after all during wet weather, then the heads should be thoroughly dried before storing them. In order to keep the cabbage for a long time and not lose its taste, it is advisable to stop watering it for 3 weeks. Cut the heads out so that the cucumber remains as long as possible. You can also simply unscrew it from the ground with the root. Thanks to a long stump, it is very convenient to hang the heads for storage, connecting them with each other. In this form, cabbage is much better preserved. Cut head out so that there are 2-3 adjacent green leaves, which will protect the head from damage, fungal diseases and rot.

How to save cabbage

For storage should be selected healthy compact heads of medium size with no signs of any diseases. Before storing for storage, it is necessary to remove from the heads of the remains of the earth and to dry them in the fresh air. In order to protect the cabbage from the defeat of gray rot, apply the method of dusting the head with chalk. Cabbage cleaning is recommended with the preservation of a long stump.

It is best to keep the cabbage with such a stump in a suspended form, periodically removing the rotting leaves. Cabbage can also be stored wrapped in paper and spread out the heads neatly on the shelves of the cellar or in trellised boxes. Lay the heads out with the sticks inside.

Storage conditions for cabbage

It is not enough to harvest a crop - it is also necessary to be able to keep it. The room where the cabbage will be stored must be prepared in advance. Ventilating it properly and disinfected with lime whitewash, it is still superfluous to fumigate the walls of gray (30-40 g per square meter). Cabbage is very sensitive to temperature conditions. The optimum air temperature should be kept between 0 and 1 degree. When the temperature rises to 4 degrees, cabbage germination and cracking occur. Freezing of heads is also unacceptable. At a temperature below -2 degrees, a darkening of the core is possible. All this negatively affects the taste qualities of cabbage and its appearance. Maintenance of the necessary temperature is ensured by the supply of external air by means of hatches.

Circulation of air will help to ensure the necessary humidity in the room. The humidity of the air for better storage of cabbage is 85-95%. To maintain it within these limits, it is recommended to ensure high-quality ventilation. To do this, it is more often to use the usual airing of the room by opening the doors, if weather permits. Frequent airing will help to avoid the accumulation of carbon dioxide, which usually appears in vegetable stores.

Cauliflower in Siberia

Cauliflower belongs to photophilous plants. Nevertheless, it adapts well to the conditions of different regions, which makes it possible to grow it in Siberia. Cauliflower can tolerate a little freeze. Only when lowering the thermometer column below minus 5 degrees can damage the heads of the plant. To get a good harvest, you need to take into account the vegetation period, calculate the time when to plant and when to harvest cabbage. In Siberia, summer is shorter and it may simply not be enough for full-fledged maturation.

Harvesting of cauliflower

Terms of harvesting of cauliflower depend on the degree of its maturation. This is determined by visual inspection of the head. It should be intact, dense, white or cream color, with a diameter of at least 8 cm. It is important to remove cabbage on time, because When overripe the head becomes crumbly, the vegetable begins to yield in terms of its taste qualities. Therefore, there is no specific date when to harvest cabbage in Siberia or some other region. It is cleaned every 2 days as the heads mature. Especially harmful is the prolonged exposure to the open sun, this can make cabbage absolutely unfit for food. To avoid this, after harvesting the ripened heads, the others pritenyayut using upper leaves. When cutting, it is necessary to leave on the head at least 4 leaves and a cob to 2 cm.

How to keep cauliflower

Cauliflower is not suitable for long-term storage. Therefore, it is only possible to talk about how to preserve the cabbage harvest in about 4-7 weeks. In this case, the temperature in the storage should be +0 ... + 0.5 degrees, and the humidity of air within 90-95%. Observance of storage conditions is extremely important for cauliflower. When frozen, the heads turn dark and become bitter in taste. The heads are placed in boxes of wood, plastic or cardboard boxes, which are covered with film.

In the refrigerator at a temperature of 0 degrees, you can store cauliflower slightly longer - up to 2 months. But it acquires a yellow color, and the taste is somewhat lost.
