What is the aneurysm of the interatrial septum?

An aneurysm of the interatrial septum is such a disease, when the atrium wall protrudes to the side.

Causes of the disease

In fact, the opinions of scientists regarding the primary causes of the appearance of this disease are divided. So, some argue that the aneurysm of the interatrial septum (MPP) is a hereditary disease. Others, on the contrary, tend to argue that the whole fault is a disruption in the formation of connective tissue that occur during the period of human embryonic development. However, it can be assumed that these theories are correct in their own way, since both are based on scientifically proven facts.

Aneurysm of the interatrial septum: primary symptoms

First of all, it should be noted that in the early stages of the disease, the disease practically does not make itself felt. Moreover, even when a pathology is detected, surgical intervention is not necessary. Specialists only recommend to regularly undergo a survey, according to the results of which it will be possible to judge the dynamics of development.

An aneurysm of the interatrial septum is most often diagnosed in the elderly due to the excessive amount of stress and strong physical exertion. In the place where the aneurysm is located, as a rule, a small hole develops successively, which, in turn, provokes outflow of blood from left to right. Then, in the process of each contraction of the heart muscle, not all blood is pumped to the left ventricle, a spontaneous ejection into the right ventricle is observed. As a consequence, there is an increased load on the right side of the heart, which in the long run often leads to the development of so-called pulmonary hypertension.

Aneurysm of the interatrial septum: treatment

Experts argue that after the appearance of the disease, as already noted above, it is not necessarily surgical surgical intervention. If the patient does not complain of pain or malaise, he can safely live the rest of his life without treatment. It is important to keep constant control over the aneurysm through the ECG. With its increase, the patient is most often hospitalized. A number of additional tests are performed in the hospital, after which it will be possible to say for sure whether surgery is needed or not. As practice shows, MPA aneurysm is rarely operated on, as the probability of complications is high enough. Intervention of surgeons is appointed only in the event that there is a large discharge of blood, which certainly leads to the subsequent development of the above-described pulmonary hypertension. When surgical treatment, specialists either cover the defect, or engage in the plastic replacement of the septum with a special patch. It is made of hypoallergenic material and is completely safe for the patient's health. But in any case it's up to the attending physician to decide which method to choose.
