What is good: the definition

When we hear the word "good", the imagination immediately begins to draw something warm, light and fluffy. However, not everyone is able to say exactly what it means. Subconsciously, we understand that this is something good, but the definition of the word "good" is always ignored. So we will try to correct this situation.

The notion of "good"

The word itself is interpreted by different dictionaries. In particular, this concept exists in the explanatory dictionaries of Ozhegov and Dahl.

The "good" definition for Ozhegov has the following:

  • By good is meant something positive and useful. A process, an action or a word that can be countered by evil. Also good is property, valuables. In some cases, good means consent. For example, to give kindness to something, that is, to allow a certain action.

In the explanatory dictionary of Kuznetsov also there is an answer to the question, what is good. The definition is:

  • Good are actions that are aimed at the good. That is, everything that brings good and does no harm, can be called good.

In the dictionary, Dal also has the word "good". The definition is as follows:

  • In the spiritual sense, good can be defined as good. This, in turn, means something useful and honest that human debt requires.

From the pages of philosophy

It is worth noting that such concepts as good and evil, are in the field of study of philosophy and ethics. Therefore, the question "What is good?" The definition of philosophy will answer best. In the broadest sense, good as a good, means:

  1. A valuable understanding that expresses the positive value of something in its relation to standard norms.
  2. A standard that meets the standards, expectations and needs of the society.

The very word "good" in the process of human development did not lose its true meaning, but at times it was used in different dialects, denoting material blessings or freedom of action.

Ethical standards

Being subject to the study of ethical disciplines, the word has one more definition:

  • Good is a category of ethical research that positively assess behavior, a phenomenon, or an event. This is good: moral, correct, affirmative, which has a positive beginning. It opposes "evil," something devastating and negative.

For human nature, it is natural to desire good and beauty. Everyone is keenly aware of the need for something good that can bring him happiness. To wish for something good is not a hypothetical phenomenon, but an inborn need of human nature, which is constant and stable.

The word "good", as defined above, is not the final point of study. Good, as a special element, is present in various spheres of human life, acquiring a slightly different meaning.

Varieties of "good"

Depending on the state in which a person is at a certain moment, what he lacks can be considered a boon. For example:

  • Health. Sometimes the word "good" comes from the definition of the situation in which a person is. For example, if he is sick, then good is meant health. But when the disease recedes, then the concept of health from the category of "higher good" turns into a self-evident phenomenon.
  • Wealth and honor. As good material wealth is desired by many, and only when they are found, people understand that financial opportunities do not fully correspond to higher human needs.
  • Power and recognition. Rising on the wheel of Fortune over the ordinary and descending to the starting point, a person realizes that power is a fleeting phenomenon, the light of a star that will sooner or later go out. Without power, a person thirsts for it, but having achieved the desired and lost, he realizes that such phenomena are not good.
  • Knowledge. Having deep knowledge in a certain field, a person can not consider them a common good, because these are nothing more than intellectual goods. Spiritual needs in this case remain unsatisfied.
  • Friendship. An elevated form of friendship, no doubt, affects the deepest spheres of human life, nevertheless intellectual and other needs remain without attention.

There are many examples of such examples. It is peculiar for a person to take what is lacking for "good". However, such an approach reveals the word rather one-sidedly.

From Good to Good

Thus, good can mean all the good, valuable and moral that satisfies all aspects of human life. It will be logical to assume that there will be a question, what kind is it?

The word "good" definition is similar to the word "good":

  • Bringing others good, good, joy and well-being. Good people can also be who respond to the needs of the outside world without compensation, and actions that bring moral satisfaction to the two sides.

Summing up, we can say the following: good is the highest form of perception of the world and the creation of the environment. Desires that satisfy all human needs without harming others. Deeds, words and thoughts that benefit the social environment and their "creator" are generally considered good, and the good itself is an innate need for which all living things aspire.
