What is a printed sheet?

It is difficult to imagine what could be humanity if the paper and the technological process of printing were not invented. On paper works of art are published, scientific works are printed, interesting news is published. However, despite all the amazing variety of books, newspapers and magazines, it's easy to see that there are not many different page sizes of different editions. How can you measure the size of a sheet of a format? The basis for considering this issue is a printed sheet.

Here we try to look at this situation with an unbiased eye through the eyes of an ordinary person. What kind of paper formats does he see in real life? Briefly enumerate them. These are standard sheets of writing paper, sheets of newspapers in several versions, several different formats of books. How to bring this diversity to one basis? If we take as a basis a standard sheet of paper, then how can we express other paper formats based on it? But here the traditional solution of this question comes to the rescue. So historically, as a basic size, a printed sheet measuring sixty centimeters by ninety centimeters was chosen, which was called a "conditionally printed sheet". Usually books, newspapers and magazines measure their format in relation to it. A standard sheet is considered a standard, filled with text on one side. This concept should be distinguished from the concept of "physical printed sheet", which means a real printed edition of the publication.

Thus, the volume of any printed publication, for example, books, newspapers or magazines can be estimated in relation to the conventional printed sheet. Let's try to show this by an example. Suppose we are talking about a book whose format is 70cm x 100cm / 16, in which there are 192 pages. In order to calculate the volume of the book, you need to perform the following calculations. The conditionally printed sheet has an area equal to 60x90 = 5400 square centimeters, physical printed sheet - 70 cm x 100 cm = 7000 square centimeters. The conversion factor is 7000/5400 = 1.29. The final calculation is as follows: (192/16) x1,29 = 15,48. So, in our case, we can say that the volume of the book in question is 15.48 conventional printed sheets. Thus, it is customary to indicate the volume of the printed publication.

For completeness of the picture in this matter, it should be noted that two more standard types of printed sheet are common. This is an author's printed sheet and a registration and publishing sheet. The first one has several measurement methods (40,000 printed characters together with spaces or 700 lines of poetic text or 22-23 ordinary typewritten pages) and is designed to measure the amount of author's work provided for printing. The second occupies the same size as the author's printed sheet, but its scope does not include the advertising material present in this publication.

The printed sheet, as it turned out, can be of different types, in which it is useful to understand. This concept plays an important role in book publishing. It allows you to really estimate the volume of the executed printing work when publishing a book.
