What does "IMHO" mean?

Very often on forums and in posts there is a word "imho". It is clear that before us is one of the "representatives" of networked Internet jargon. But what does "IMHO" mean? How can you decipher this strange word?

Wikipedia suggests turning to the history of his birth. It is assumed that the beginning of it was put the English phrase "In My Humble Opinion", which can literally be translated into our great and mighty Russian as "in my humble opinion." And if you use the abbreviation of the English words that make up this phrase, you will get nothing but four letters giving sounds that are denoted by the letters "and", "m", "x" and "o" in Russian.

So, the meaning of the word "IMHO" is explained by a rather long phrase. That is, a person who expressed his own opinion about something knows that there are other options for judgments. He does not insist that his point of view is the only true one! However, he does not want to remain silent either.

This is on the one hand. But the Russian soul always surprised foreigners. Their logic is inexplicable. Saying the word "probably", we sometimes express not doubt or speculation, but just a firm conviction. The same thing often happens with the word "IMHO".

Here the user writes on the forum post: "You are wrong, absolutely differently you have to act in this case!" And adds at the end of the speech a modest "IMHO". What does it mean? Assumption or doubt in his rightness? Not at all!

Perhaps this is precisely because of the ignorance of some Slavs of the exact translation of the phrase, which gave life a slang word. And, seeing this turn, the wits came up with their own original way of deciphering the abbreviation, only not in English, but in Russian.

What does "IMHO" mean in the understanding of those who do not have a sense of humor? There is no question about any doubts, everything is concrete and clear. "I have an opinion - challenge the hell!"

In fact, the ironic options for answering the question of what "imho" means, there are a great many. Basically, the first part of the transcripts practically coincides, and only the second part varies.

If you try to briefly list them, you will get something like this:

  1. The horse-radish you will condemn;
  2. Horseradish refuse;
  3. I want to voice;
  4. Albeit erroneous.

Or else there are such interpretations: "Individual opinion of the owner of the answer"; "True opinion - the horseradish refute!" And some, the most firmly convinced types, and do tend to the fact that the urgent question, which means "IMHO", there is only one clear and correct answer: "I want to disprove the existing opinions!"

However, no matter how cynical in their wit is gnawed, after all, this word indicates rather subjectivity, rather than the objectivity of the Internet user's statement. "Imho", most likely, acts as an analogue of the opening words "in my opinion", "according to my opinion", "in my opinion", "in my experience", "according to my observations", "I think so", "this is mine Personal opinion "and others. And, just as in the letter you should select the listed expressions with commas, in relation to "IMHO" there are the same rules.

It's another matter when the question is put, what letters to write this word: uppercase or lowercase, Russian or English. Here there are no precise rules yet. Someone writes the whole word like the generally accepted abbreviations of HPP, HBDD, HIGH SCHOOL, using all capital letters. Other words are written in lowercase. And some even use English at all. But all this is not important.

It is interesting not only the history of the birth of the word, but also its way to a simple Internet user. There is an opinion that the first time it was used in a fantastic film. From there, the abbreviation was picked up by professional programmers of the FIDO network, and only then did this word make its step to universal popularity, firmly entering into the speech of all other layers of the Internet society.

Those who fought for the purity of the great and mighty Russian sprinkle ash on their head when they have to read the correspondence of the current youth. "YapTsTolom", "rzhunimagu", "spoki-noki" and other "newly formed" running words. So, "IMHO" on their background looks just a modest reduction of a long phrase, a sort of tracing English abbreviation.
