Warsaw Airport: Chopin and Modlin

The largest airport in Poland is the airport named after Frederic Chopin (Lotnisko Chopina w Warszawie), founded back in 1927. However, it was originally called Okecie International Airport. And now in everyday life Poles often use the usual name - Okecie (from the area where the airport is located - 10 km to the south-west from the city center).

Warsaw International Airport

The airport was completely destroyed during the Second World War. The restoration of all buildings was completed only in 1969, and it was again put into operation. In 2001, Warsaw Airport was renamed to Frederic Chopin Airport.

It serves up to 70% of the country's total passenger flow, including low-cost flights.

Airport Infrastructure

Warsaw Chopin Airport consists of two terminals, united by a common departure and arrival zone. There is a passage between the terminals themselves.

The airport building is compact, but spacious. Passengers are easy to navigate here, especially since the staff speak English well and understand English. In addition, in the arrivals hall there are information points, currency exchange and a lost property for tourists, and in the departure hall - a banking and post office. There is also a zone for the mother and child: it is located in the arrivals hall and consists of five rooms. Using it is free.

Between the second and first floor of the terminal there is a restaurant, on the top floor there is a medical emergency room.

How to get to Chopin airport?

Getting from the city center to the airport will not be difficult. Every day, with an interval of 10 minutes from the central station to Warsaw airport, city buses No. 188 and No. 175 are sent. The journey takes about twenty minutes. At night you can get there by bus number 611. Another option is special hotel shuttles, which are provided by high-class hotels - Jan III Sobieski, Bristol, Marriott.

From the airport to the central part of the city can be reached in the same way. In addition, in front of the arrivals hall there is a taxi rank, where you can hire a car at any time. For greater safety, use the services of certified taxi services that do not overstate the price of travel. Approximately a trip to the center will cost you 15-17 euros depending on the final destination.

In 2011, the airport was opened Warszawa Lotnisko Chopina - railway station. Every 10-15 minutes there are trains going to Warsaw-Central Station. This route is convenient because it does not depend on traffic jams, and the ticket price will please those who want to save money on the trip (from 3 to 5 euros depending on the chosen class).

Warsaw: Modlin airport

Relatively new Warsaw airport opened in 2012 and was named Modlin (Warsaw Modlin). It is located 40 kilometers from the city center and serves mainly low cost airlines. Warsaw Modlin Airport is a two-storey building where the guests of the city will find everything necessary for a comfortable stay in anticipation of the flight: waiting room, information desk, duty free, cafe, ATM, currency exchange, newsagents with magazines and newspapers, car rental companies.

How to get to Modlin Airport?

There are several ways to get to Modlin airport:

  • Take advantage of Modlinbus buses that leave from the square in front of the Palace of Culture (not far from the city's central railway station). The fare is 7 euros. But by purchasing a ticket directly on the company's website, you will pay less.
  • Go on a suburban train from the central station of the city to the Modlin station, and then change to a bus that rides to the airport terminal. The cost of this combined route is 3 euros. For travel to the city center, the ticket can be purchased at special points in the airport building or directly on the bus. It will operate for an hour and applies to all types of land transport.
