Treatment of drug rhinitis

Medicamentous rhinitis is a chronic disease that occurs with frequent use of vasoconstrictive drugs to eliminate edema of the nasal mucosa. Medical rhinitis refers to chronic non-allergic diseases and occurs when using drugs that cause vasoconstriction in the nasal mucosa. In the emergence of this disease involves a number of factors, which is why the treatment of medicamentous rhinitis should be carried out in a complex. First of all, you need to remove the pathological cause that causes the disease, and identify the presence of an allergic component in the development of the disease.

The causes of medical rhinitis

Drugs are created to help people cope with a variety of ailments, however, there are a number of diseases that manifest themselves as a result of taking medication. Often this is due to the manifestation of side effects of the drug or with unreasonable and uncontrolled reception of medicines. One such manifestation is drug-induced rhinitis, which occurs against the background of medication: vasoconstrictive drugs, neuroleptics, tranquilizers, drugs for lowering blood pressure, drugs and alcohol.

The emergence of drug rhinitis

Frequent use of vasoconstrictive drugs leads to the fact that there is a dependence and to stop the introduction of the medication there is a withdrawal syndrome: the nasal shells increase in volume, breathing becomes difficult, the sense of smell decreases. As a result, a person is disturbed by sleep, there is slight anxiety and headaches, and sometimes small nasal bleeding occurs . Today the concept of "medicinal rhinitis" includes several conditions of different etiology. Rhinitis, resulting from prolonged use of sympathomimetics, often causes extensive nasal congestion and runny nose. The condition is normalized one to three weeks after discontinuation of use of the drug.

Treatment of drug rhinitis

The disease is often manifested by difficulty in nasal breathing, edema and hyperemia of the mucosa, light discharge from the nasal cavity, so the very first action to eliminate the disease will be the withdrawal of the medication that is the source of the problem. Most often, the treatment of allergic rhinitis includes exposure to a specific etiology of rhinitis, for example, to eliminate a runny nose, to hormonal correction, or to eliminate an infectious disease. Often in these cases, symptomatic therapy is used. Most often for this purpose, drugs of different groups are used: anticholinesergics, nasal corticosteroids, antihistamines, sympathomimetics and other medications, the purpose of which is to remove mucus edema and restore normal breathing.

Treatment of medicamentous rhinitis by surgical means

In a condition that is resistant to drug therapy, additional methods of treatment are often used. Surgical operation is just an auxiliary means to facilitate the patient's life and continue medical treatment. Surgical treatment of medicamentous rhinitis is most often shown with a strong curvature of the nasal septum or with hypertrophy of the nasal concha, both of which contribute to the development of edema in the nasal cavity and prevent the normalization of outflow. In this case, the plastic of the nasal septum can help. To date, there are several surgical methods that give excellent results in the treatment of hypertrophy of the nasal passages, such as laser cauterization, cryotherapy, submucosal resection, electrocautery.

Asking the question: "How to treat medical rhinitis?", It is necessary, first of all, to pay attention to the abolition of the vasoconstrictive drug, from which the dependence arises, and then the treatment will be much more successful.
