Tomatoes, varieties are important to choose correctly

Today, tomato seeds of many varieties are on sale, it seems that other crops do not have such abundance. And it's great! Growing tomatoes is now much more interesting, and going to the store for seeds turns into a real shopping. Tomato from the usual vegetable has become a garden miracle. Ogorodniki brag about each other with unusual fruits and are proud to grow exotic tomatoes. Varieties with strange fruit names for tomatoes ("Persimmon", "Watermelon", "Banana", "Cherry", "Yablonka of Russia", etc.) strike the ear and imagination. But, meanwhile, let us recall how the usual word "tomato" is translated from Italian - "GOLDEN APPLE".

Competent selection of varieties allows you to get exactly such tomatoes as you need. Experimenting with different varieties, you will be able to pick the best to taste and suitable for your growing tomatoes. Tomato varieties are divided in terms of maturation (early, middle, late), height (short and tall, requiring supports), type of growth (deterministic, they do not need to be plucked, and indeterminate, branches and the main shoot should be plucked to accelerate fruiting) Growing conditions (open ground or greenhouse), cold resistance, drought resistance, yield and size of fruit. Choose from the listed qualities what you need, and you can safely go to the store to buy your own tomatoes. Varieties can be used for growing in certain areas - zoned (they are adapted to the specifics of the area, tested in practice and will not let you down).

On the fruits of different varieties should talk separately:

The fruits of tomatoes are divided into dining rooms (salad) and technical (for canning). Table sorts have beautiful, large fruits with thick skin. They are fleshy and malochnye, lezhkie and suitable for transportation.

Technical varieties are vintage, have a medium-sized fruit, juicy, with a thin skin. Such fruits are easily overripe and are not suitable for transportation. But, the strangest thing is that technical grades are often tastier than canteens, since they gain more sugar.

Fruits of tomatoes can be of different colors; Red (in most varieties), pink, yellow (or orange), black. Still there are varieties with unusual coloring: white, brown, striped, etc. And it's different in shape: round, flat, elongated, pear-shaped, with a spout, etc. It would seem that the color and shape of the fruit are of purely decorative significance, but this is completely different, the fruits of different colors vary greatly in the content of substances and vitamins, taste and aroma . For example, krasnoplodnye varieties have a less spicy flavor than chondroids (they can even be distinguished by smell). Varieties with pink fruits are the sweetest. With yellow fruits contain much more carotene and vitamin C than varieties with fruits of other colors (by the way, the greenhouse tomatoes that we buy in the spring, hoping for vitamins, look like tomatoes only externally, they have very few vitamins and almost no carotene). Fruits of different shapes vary greatly in taste. There are also small-fruited tomatoes of the Cherry variety (named for their similarity to cherries), they look original, tasty, good for canning, but they do not yield a very big harvest.

It should be taken into account that any variety can not be "all-round", that is, having dignity in one, may have shortcomings in something else. For example, a low-fat tomato variety is very convenient for growing , however, they are less productive than tall ones. And industrial, high-yielding, require careful compliance with agricultural technology.

Going after the seeds you still need to understand the difference between varieties from hybrids: hybrids are resistant to unfavorable conditions, tasty and yielding, good on all sides. But, of course, hybrids have their own disadvantages: firstly, hybrid seeds are rather expensive; Secondly, they can not get their seeds from them (that is, they can obtain seeds, but they will not inherit parental qualities). In general, weigh "for" and "against" and make your choice.

But most importantly, go to work creatively, experiment. And be sure to try new varieties of tomatoes, they are becoming more and more interesting and unusual. Good luck in your endeavors!
