The history of the museum business of the capital of Slobozhanshchina has been around for a century and a half. Even in the first half of the XIX century, in parallel with the founding of the first university in Eastern Europe, the city is actively beginning to work towards the collection and preservation of historical and cultural relics.

In 1835 the Museum of Fine Arts at Kharkov University began its work in the city. At the turn of the XIX-XX centuries other establishments were created. In particular, ethnographic and art museums.

In the early 1920s, after the final establishment of Soviet power in Ukraine, a large-scale reorganization of the museum network began in Kharkiv. This process was led by a special body - GubKOPMIS. On his initiative, many modern museums of Kharkiv were opened. In addition, the city held numerous excursions, as well as cognitive lectures on architecture, history and art. In general, the 20-30-ies of the twentieth century were the most fruitful in the history of the museum business of the city.

The most interesting museums of Kharkiv: description and list

Some Kharkov museums surprise with their themes and unusual expositions. So, in some of them, for example, you can learn about the history of the city water pipe, the features of studying UFOs or discover the specifics of different sexual cultures.

Among the most interesting and unusual are the following Kharkiv museums (list):

  • Water.
  • Plumbing and ceramic tiles.
  • The Cosmos complex.
  • Sexual cultures.
  • The Kharkov militia.

Museum of Water

This institution is located on the banks of the Seversky Donets River, in the village of Kochetok. The water museum was founded in the 80's on the basis of a water company, which provides 70% of the needs of the Ukrainian metropolis in drinking water.

In the museum there are at least thousands of different exhibits. These are ancient anchors, models of wells and water systems, ancient drops of water, enclosed in salt crystals, and much more. The museum tells not only about the history of the Kharkov water pipeline, but also about the geography of the Seversky Donets river, and also about the role of water in human life as a whole. Practically every day here come sightseeing groups and individual tourists from different localities of the region and Ukraine.

Museum of Sexual Cultures

This institution has no analogues in Ukraine. The Museum of Sexual Cultures was opened in 1999 by local scientists-sexologists. At the initial stage of existence the basis of his expositions was the personal collection of Professor V. V. Krishtal. Today, it conducts active educational work with young people and couples in the field of sex and relations between the sexes.

The museum itself consists of ten rooms, each of which represents one or another of the sexual culture of our planet. In them, the visitor will be able to get acquainted with the peculiarities of the sexual life of the peoples of Africa and America, Europe and India, Ancient Rome and China. A separate hall is completely devoted to the so-called sexual deviations (or deviations).

You can see the exposition of the Museum of Sexual Cultures in Kharkov every day, from 11:00 to 19:00. The entrance ticket costs 30 hryvnas, there are age restrictions (children under 18 years old are not allowed to visit the main halls of the museum).

The Militia Museum

The building of the museum of the Kharkov police hides behind the dense foliage of old trees on the street of Myrrh-Bearers (former Sovnarkomovskaya), under a sinister number 13. It opened its doors for visitors forty years ago and tells in great detail about the history of local law enforcement bodies.

Attitude to the militiamen in modern society is extremely ambiguous. The Kharkov museum helps citizens to understand how difficult and dangerous this work is. In its expositions, numerous documents, photographs and awards are collected. The features of urban order protection during the Second World War are described in great detail. In a separate room, the names of those law enforcers who perished at the hands of the fascist invaders were immortalized.

In addition to standard museum work, lectures and meetings are regularly held here, as well as certificates and awards to police officers.

Conclusion

Not only history and beautiful architecture, but also its fine museums are famous for the city of Kharkov. Museums of sexual cultures, water or the history of the Kharkov militia should be visited necessarily if you are in this beautiful city. In them you will be told (and shown) a lot of interesting and informative.
